I bought the set of three at Autozoo a long time ago and they work great. They also handle quite a bit of torque. When I loosened teh drain on my 560SEL the first time, I had an 18" breaker bar with two feet of pipe on the end of it with me on the end of the pipe. Felt like I was going to turn the car over before it came loose. And this was on a car that had regular fluid service. Wife's SL came loose with no trouble at all and I suspect P.O. was not as good about service. Yet both cars had the exact same differential. Go figure.

my Ford broke the bolt tension!
You think hanging off the bolt is bad? I did my first diff. oil change just a month or so into my endeavors as a home mechanic on my 300cdt, and I got the drain plug out fine, but couldn't budge the fill plug. Wrong order to do it in, I know. I had no guidance except for the Haynes book, and no experience with cars whatsoever. Here's the good part:
To break the bolt loose (after 3 unfruitful hours of hammering, wrenching, and liquid wrenching), I cinched down two US military equipment straps locked together, one end to the handle of the allen wrench and the other to the towing hitch mounted on the back of my dad's Ford. I drove the Ford forwards a foot or two, praying hugely, and lo and behold! the plug had loosened like nothing!! And it didn't affect my diff. whatsoever. Beginner's luck, but hey, it worked. |

trick
a trick i learned from my dad: fix a wrench so that you can put a jack under it and use the weight of the car against the jack. just make sure it is secure and wont fly out and bean you.

"searching archives saves work... "
If that was to me, this was long before I had found that there were forums like these...
