Old news, I am looking forward to seeing the 07 S320 CDI next year. I also hear that the E400CDI may be coming over. Oh I hope so.
Are you guys comparing 240D's to the new diesels again? Come on an E400CDI will roast the rear tires and get better mileage then any 240D ever got. 13k mile oil changes, no oil leaks, and no valve adjustments, nice radio, climate control and better seats. Hay you can turn on the AC and not feel like you threw an anchor out of the trunk.

if a new small mercedes diesel could get 45 mpg that is "almost" double what I get from my c280. I run premium in my c280 and the cost is equal or more than diesel, so I am already "paying double" at the pump!

Seriously though, people DIY all kinds of things on these new TDI engines, it's just a new thing to learn. Add a laptop and some software to your toolbox.

I'm not comparing the 240D or SDL to any of the new ones.
I just question paying several thoussand more for a new TDI Jetta compared to a gasser, then having to pay 30 cents more per gallon for diesel. You'd be in the hole for several years while you wait for the MPG difference to make a difference in your pocket. If diesle were 30 cents cheaper than gas, I coould see it withuot doing the math, but not 30 cents more. .02

ford is trying to put urea into diesel pumps, it would have a valve that was actuated by a special fill nozel in the urea compatible cars and it would open the valve to fill up your urea everytime you pump.
What I read about the mercedes urea deal was that it would be like an oil change, just get it taken care of I think every other change and you'll be alright. Not sure though, that was over a year ago. -Nate

The new cars don't scare me one bit, the W210 for sure is every bit as diy'er friendly as any W126 I have ever worked on. The E320CDI looks like a standard MB under the hood. Standard I6 diesel old school nothing new. With the code reader it can't imagin it being a pita to fix. The V6 diesel may make things a bit tighter under the hood of the E, but the S should have plenty of room.
The new 7spd trans bother me the most but those will be sorted out. As the new cars age parts will get cheaper, and knowledge about how to fix them will become availible.

That is what makes these old crapboxes we drive so much easier to maintain. Every part made nowadays is obsolete come the next model year, driving parts prices through the roof for particular models.

I don't think MB does that, they use the same part throught a model run, but just charge twice as much for it. MB shares parts between cars, thats why we can afford to own rare W126's such as the SDL's. If every part was 1986 SDL specific like some other companies do everything would cost $500+.
"Getting it to work with everything else in 20 years time is another matter." Yeah I know both of my W126's prove that.

Which 210 cluster would you prefer? The '00 model year or the '99? The clusters in the '00 models, although highly funtional, become "display defective" quite often. It develops dead pixels in almost every temp and gear selector screen. The '97 E Class have a completely different blower motor than the '98 and require a new unit as opposed to brushes. Sealed altenators are in, sealed transmissions are in, sealed engines are the way of the future. In order to service these parts you may either go to the dealer, or invest in special equipment. Mercedes WAS at the top of JD Powers charts for the early '90's. New Mercedes models, until recent 2003 + models started being produced, ALL got very high initial quality ratings. Long term ownership was less than stellar. I suppose some of that can be attributed to the dealer, though. There is a reason people gripe. Own a newer car, drive it for a year and then report back. The grass is not always greener. Just because a car is newer, does not make it superior in every way.
