I'm at around 68 too at that RPM, or 70 @3100 in fourth. That's normal, or so I thought. I have an '85 300D with the 2.88. Do the SDs have an extra gear in the transmission or what? I thought 70 @3100 was normal spec for 617.952/722.315. Do I need to take corrective action?

In the '87, between 75 and 85 depending on the grade ... but that I guess is not useful information for an '84 driver ...

i think the sdl and sd have 2.87 or 2.65 depending on year. hence higher speed with 3000 rpm.

3000 RPM makes the Grey Ghost (300SD) go 85mph with a 2.47 rear end and 15" whels..

3000 RPM is about 85 mph (137 km/h) in the 300D 2.5 Turbo. I am not sure what the diff ratio is, I haven't looked at it yet.

I worked it out once for 3.07 rear end, 14" wheels with orig. 195 X R70 tires.
Came out to 66 mph @ 3000 rpm ( 22 mph /1000 rpm). FWIW

350sdl 1990
took a trip to indy today. 73 mph at 3000. 85 degrees on the dash, 95 outside with the air on recirec. book says this has a 2,87, the 300d 2.5 says it is a 2.65. this squares with the rather doggy acceleration that i experienced with my 300 2.5. although i now think it probably had a clogged intake after reading here all about it.

had a revelation the other day... 2.87 and 2.88 are the same rear end. all this time i had been thinking that they were significantly different!

3000 RPMs
Checked on my way to work. My 1984 300D did just a hair below 70 at 3000 on fairly level ground.
