From the add....Car is very quiet. Perhaps we should all chip in and send him a few hearing aid batteries. Either that or the car has taken his hearing totally as he states he has owned it for awhile. Just love the missing picture of the front drivers seat perhaps some elements of this car are just too good to photograph as well. Just kidding of course as when I start mine I have to listen very carfully to determine if it has started. I would hate to clash the starter and ring gears on a second attempt

The seller is in Anaheim which means that the car sits in Highway 5 traffic and the traffic is generally louder than the car's engine and therefore drowns out the motor noise. Even then he doesn't specify that the engine is running when it is "quiet"

As for "pickup", maybe he used to drive a golf cart.

That's a fine looking car, and if I were in the area I'd certainly want to take a look at it. I don't know about the whole "private auction" thing though...

I'm fortunate to have one of the 4 speed 240D's myself. I've never driven an automatic 240D, but from what I've been reading over the years I think the auto 240D and the 4-speed 240D are two totally different animals.

I'm really tempted to place a bid on this car. My "stable" is still empty, seriously empty. Being European I like stick driving - I grew up with stick, sort of, not used to driving tranny
Some more comments to this auction are highly welcome.

And btw this is my 1st post, so please be nice to the noob!

I've got the same int. as that car and from the pictures I'm drooling. Mines only 1/20th as nice. Look at the firmness and plumpness of the seat pleats. Rear seat the same. tight nets. Complete insulation on ac hose.(Details) Engine compartment looks very nice, maybe some rust on booster. Fine looking car in general.

That sure is a damn fine looking 240D! IMHO, having an immaculate interior in these old cars is just as important as the condition of the engine. They are not cheap to replace and repair. Considering the 240Ds are mechanically damn near bullet proof, the condition of the interior and body is that much more attractive.

Having driven an '81 240D for 9 years, I can tell you there are some differences between that and the '80 that may or may not matter to you. First, the '80 is more related to the first generation of the W123 than to the second. The MB tex in that has much more of a "vinyl" feel and the little indentations actually can leave dimples in your legs. On a hot summer day, the older stuff sticks to your legs much more than the newer stuff. You may also note the instrumentation looks more "vintage". I happen to like the look of the 80s instrumentation much better.

Also, the A/C is not as good as the '81 + W123s. It uses a York piston compressor, and the system as a whole is not that cool (not that Mercerdes has been noted for it's excellent air conditioning - ever). I remember my dad's '77 300D never felt cool in the summer, while the 240 was at least comfortable.

There are some other subtle differences, but that is what really comes to mind. While this car is low mileage, probably not even broken in, consider the kind of driving and amount it has done. Two miles of driving per day on short errands causes more wear and tear than longer trips. Remember that it is starting these engines that kills them.

More of the plus side, though. This has a manual transmission, which is critical for this car. 62 HP for a 3700 lb vehicle doesn't get you going that fast, so the manual makes a huge difference. And like the guy said, they are fun (and easy) to drive! You will find the 240D to be a simple and economical vehicle to drive, and this would be tops on my list. I replaced mine with a 300SDL, and while the difference in refinement, power, and comfort is an absolute quantuum leap, all the stuff that I have to fix and/or replace is making me long for the simple days of my 240D. (I once had a set of brake pads last 50,000 miles because of the ability to downshift - I'm lucky to get 10,000 on the SDL!)

Hope that is helpful.

Success

Hey Teemeister. I can't bring that car to Phoenix. Pity. But I hope you will be able to. I agree with the statement that the low mileage might be a problem. Lots of stop start short trips is will possibly wear an engine more than a very high mileage but if I had the money that wouldn't stop me. Much cheaper putting a new engine in than trying to restore a body and interior to that condition.

Note that there is no sun damage to the dash and very little to the plastic coverings over the door frames around the windows, which are usually shrivelled so badly they are about six sizes too small.

240D Ebay

Nice looking car, I may take a look at it this weekend. A couple of things do bother me:

- no sunroof! Isn't it correct that most did come with an automatic sunroof?
- plenty of spelling errors by the lister. The older I get, the more intolerant I become to basic spelling mistakes. They just take off plenty of credibility from the listing.
- major service at 120,00 miles? My mechanic refers to a 'major service' when brakes are replaced, trans. fluid etc beyond the regular oil change. I do this about every 15,000 miles, so this listed car should be more than due for another.
- Costco tires. Who private labels them?

Otherwise, looks like a good car for the money

ccooper,

I looked closely at the one picture of the engine compartment... and I have owned a 1980 pre Aug 240 manual for three years...

My car does not have the York... and I really think looking at the picture that that car does not either... I think the upright York sits pretty high on the engine ( I have a York and it's mount off a 1979 wagon ...5 cyl non turbo.. which I removed ).
I think that you can not see the Delco sitting low on the driver's side of the engine... but you can see the top of the alternator on the passenger side in that one picture...

" leave dimples in your legs. On a hot summer day, the older stuff sticks to your legs much more than the newer stuff. "

You are IN a LUXURY CAR... you are not supposed to be sweating AT ANY TIME.....NEVER !!!!!

1. Put your CLOTHES ON ....
2. Turn ON the Air conditioner.....

For those in the know... that is about the most perfect car configuration in existance... and looks amazingly well cared for...
