190D 2.5Turbo 5-speed.

As far as I can tell, the 1987 190D 2.5T was never available with a 5-speed in the US market.

That being said, I have one. I just completed the conversion from automatic to 5-speed. The car drives great and runs strong, although there are still some details I need to work out (not with the conversion, just some other items on the car).

I love it.

How difficult is it to put in a 5cyl turbo motor into a car that originally had a 2.2 motor ? Is it a direct drop in (you would probably need to use the 2.2 flywheel right? ).... ???

Flywheel Q's.

I'm not sure if the 2.2 and the 2.5 use the same flywheel or not. I used a 2.5 non turbo flywheel, and everything bolted up 100% perfect.

I did the tranny swap, not the engine swap. I think the trans swap is easier than an engine swap. I suppose if you had an entire 2.5Turbo car to swap parts from, it might not be too bad. I might be mistaken, however.

There is only one 5-speed manual transmission for the 190s. I would assume all of the parts are the same.

I think there are at least 3 trannys

I believe that there are at least 3 different 5-speeds used in 190's. The diesels use slightly different ratios than the gassers. Then there is the Getrag "dogleg" 5-speed which is used in the 16V cars.

The 5-spd tranny started in the '80s on the 240D as an option, then went into the 190D, 2.2 engine. The rear ends are different from one engine to the other, so you may have to watch the ratios and have a speed shop change/add to the gear off the tranny for correct speedo reading/performance. You'll also need to chenge the flywheel and have it balanced.
