A fair question that.

Definitely has SOME type of oval canister on the exhaust pipe just after it leaves the turbo, looks similar to the primary CAT on my old Jaguar.

I'll post a pic,that should settle it

I'm not sure what it will settle. Cars that go in for the trap oxidizer recall are fitted with an oxidizer catalyst after the turbo. Looks just like a catalytic converter.

Maybe 'catalytic converter' has taken on a generic context so while the chemical functions are different for gassers and Diesels the technology or theory might be similar enough to allow them the same name.

Flooding unburned Diesel fuel at ~1000*F (I can't get alt+248 to work) with oxygen won't do much without pressure to liven the party. I wonder what chemical catalyst takes the place of pressure.

catalytic ?

i will take a stab at what little knowledge i have on the subject:

1. in a catalytic converter there are ceramic grids that get hot and stay hot enough to burn off any unburnt gasoline fragments so that they wont pollute our air. as an aside i believe they also burn off oil smoke to a large extent.

2. a trap oxidiser as i understand it has some kind of grid, which i am not sure if it is ceramic or not, and it collects up soot until somehow enough is gathered to create a burning effect and it is burnt off all at once, more or less, then the process starts over. the hitch is that sometimes they malfundtion and become plugged wo ever burning everything off. sometimes they apparently break up and on the 86 87 mbs they would spray parts into the motor.

so i am not familiar enough with the newer mbs to know exactly what they have.

Gee,a trap oxidiser, never thought of that.

I recall they caused problems around 1986-87 and were replaced but I was unaware they were still being used.

trappy

well, they caused problems because they were between the exhaust and the turbo. if positioned after the turbo they only can plug up and cause minor problems compared to where the y were in the 86 87's.

What do the sensors on the 98-99 E300TDs read?

Does anyone know if they are resistance sensors or ones that give an electrical signal to the ECU?

On a 96 VW TDI the sensors were on the exhaust to measure temperature. There would be one sensor before the cat and one after the cat and an injector to spray fuel into the exhaust if the ETs weren’t hot enough.

Would there be similar uses for these sensors 98-99 TD?

On the VW you could wire one 200 ohm resistor in place of the pre cat sensor and one 240 ohm resistor post cat to "trick" the ECU if you didn't get the recall done and wanted to take the cat out and "loose it".

Taking the cat out of my VW TDI increased mpgs, made for quicker spool up from a dead stop and there would be no smoke.
