Catalytic Converter Necessary??

Just a thought here.

Since my '98 E300TD is emissions exempt in New York is the Cat,Converter superfluous or is it an integral part of the engine system?

Or would I be better of without it?

Thumbs up

I've seen LLY D-max motors ('04.5+) have lower EGTs and spool quicker without a cat... FWIW.

Unneccesary back pressure, that's what I'm thinking of here.

If there's a sensor in or downstream of the cat it may upset the ECU if you remove the cat.

Exactly the point of my question, does the ECU need the Cat to function?

Exactly my point too It can only need the cat to function if it has some way of knowing whether the cat is there. The car doesn't have a system downstream of the cat that cares whether the cat is there. So, no wires to the cat, yank it.

In the forum index page it used to say about the tech help section 'get your questions answered by professional technicians' or something like that. It doesn't say that anymore

Yes....post cat' O2's output is required, a slow swing signal to ECU.
ECU monitors cat' efficiency this way.
Strategies will change in ECU output commands.

Is the Dauphine your own conversion or a Henney or FGC?

What's the difference between a Dauphine and a Gordini?

Thanks,

For gassers there are cat eliminator kits that provide a dummy downstream O2 signal to the ECU. I wonder if those will work with a Diesel. It might have to be a smarter eliminator that responds to the upstream signal rather than a fixed resistance broadcast if MB's ECU is particularly sneaky.

Have you addressed the EGR and PCV systems already? There's more potential for those systems to cause problems.

The Dauphine is not a Henney Kilowatt{although the former factory is nearby}.

This was done by industrialist Bud Cohen for his friend concert violinist Jascha Heifetz, who used it about a dozen years in Beverly Hills,I've got reams of registration renewals in his name, plus other documentation.

What powers it is a '20's vintage Baker electric car motor pushed to 96 volts with field weakening resistance speed control.

Beautifully done conversion with helper springs, burl walnut dash and Triumph TR2 steering wheel and accessories.

Goes about 40 miles between charges with about 40mph being top speed, great for groceries.

I just plug it into the photovoltaic array on the carriage barn roof and in 2 days she's charged!

eleminators

i would not assume that a kit for a gasser would work for a diesel. and a sensor downstream of the cat would not be necessary to measure its affect on the car. with the back pressure it creates it would have an affect on all elements between the cat and the combustion chamber. i would think. i would also think there is a good chance that there is some kind of monitering device in the cat or downstream of it.

You all should know a diesel operates lean 99% of the time. An O2 sensor would be of no use on a diesel.

I was just thinking of putting a custom exhaust on my E300 as the stock system is solid but has a ton of internal rattles in the muffler and cat. Damn computers!!!
