Install torque converter - pictures
This one is for the rookies. I have always wanted to show pics of the "notches" in the torque converter shaft and the "pins" that slide up into them. I finally took some pics that came out pretty good that hopefully shows what you have to align when you are putting the torque converter back into the transmission.
As you look down the input shaft of the tranmission you can see what I call a "pin" at the 12 o'clock position. There is another "pin" at the 6 o'clock position. You have to turn the torque converter till it slides onto the pins and then it is properly installed. Everybody that already knew this can just enjoy the photography.

Looks like the standard 6 bolt pan, found on 1981 and up vehicles.

This one is out of a '85 300SD. It is getting a new front seal.

I have one of those 6-bolts sitting on my shelf, but its been awhile since I looked at it. The older 4 bolt style, (at least on the W116 300SD and probably the early 300D and 240D) has a torque converter with 2 much more slender, more fragile fingers.

Yea -I pulled an engine/tranny apart on an '83 240D (four bolt pan) and played heck getting the torque converter off. Seems the fingers had worn in such a way that they actually created a "catch" that the converter would hang up on. I suspect that one day that particular torque converter is going to fail in a bad sort of way. Looking back I should have replaced it with a tc that was not worn that way.
