E 300 TD overheating solved!

Another annoying gremlin solved!

My '98 E300TD would generally run at 80C when I got it 2 weeks ago.

Shortly thereafter it would, on occasion spike up to 95-100,but not consistently until 2 days ago when it would stay up there after reaching operating temperature.

Curiosity impelled me to pop the hood and check the fan, which was hung up on a piece of loose plastic which prevented it from rotating!

Here are some pics, the first shows the missing sliver on the strip between the fan blades, the second pic shows the sliver which was wedging the fan, after I pulled it off, strange but true.

Also may account for a slight acceleration delay which has since disappeared.[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

You can find the most amazing things when you open the hood.

That piece of plastic could've cost you a trip to the Bahamas.

E300 Turbo Fresserei

The fan belt on mine bit a hole in the top radiator hose, which had the decency to spill once I reached the shop and not while shooting along at 90 mph. I think the radiator has been replaced in mine by the former owner, and someone had installed the hose improperly. I had the engine mounts redone in my overhaul of the car, as well. I love my car, but it has a goodly amount of this sh++ty plastic to fall, break, or snap off with strategic effect.

Yes,I can identify with the sh--ty plastic, believe me.

In my case the former owner told me he had the radiator replaced once after the front end bottomed out on a concrete divider, something he said these diesel 210's are subject to on account of the engine length which leaves little room between radiator and fan.

Apparently this loose, fractured plastic piece was a remnant from this accident.

Donnerwetter!

Dear Colleague, thank you. I think my car suffered a mishap of a similar kind, as well. It is an impressive engine, and it gives me great joy. Let us hope it refrains from eating other bits in front of it. I hope you enjoy your new possession.

I am enjoying it thoroughly, when it idles you cannot tell it is a diesel.

I have found it a well engineered vehicle mechanically with excellent road manners.

However along with these electronic complications come the inevitable need for service and repair, thankfully I am fairly well equipped to handle this thanks in no small measure to the advice and assistance of the people here on this board.

Same thing happened to me on my way back from DC a few weeks ago, I pulled into my friends driveway and heard a can-clanking sound....so I go " " and open the hood to see as it seemed to be running fine (from inside the car you couldn't hear/tell anything) and I saw that the fan shroud had come unclipped, fallen back on the fan/power steering belt, and had a hole cut in it on top from the fan, and a notch in the side where the belt was rubbing it. So I shut it down, clipped the shroud back on, and then everything was fine....I think the shroud wasn't in properly to begin with. The car had been running around 95-100C during the last couple hundred miles of the trip as well, so I'm assuming its because the sawing was slowing the fan down. I sure am thankful for my metal fan blade....the plastic version would have likely shattered in that event. Temps went back to the 85/normal mark once I took care of that as well.....so now I just have a beat up fan shroud and interesting story. I should take a picture of what the fan did to the shroud.....when I get a chance I'll do that.....
