99 E300td turbo, intake & exhaust peformance mods.

Wanted to know if anyone has done any peformance mods with their E300 beyond speedtuner chip like:

- Boost control valve that would allow the turbo to give a few extra PSI to control smoke after IP give more fuel.

- Cut out cat, would allow for faster spool up and worth a couple of more PSI without ECU or boost mods.

- Bigger intercooler, control intake temps; cooler air = less unburnt fuel.

- K&N filter and filter pod, more air in the turbo intake = mo better.

- Bigger injectors, more fuel along with more air thats been cooled = !

I own a 97 TDI Pasat, these mods along with ECU tunning on the TDI's 1.9 liter engine would give the TDIs 250 ft/pds of torque on a dyno (about 277 to the crank) reliably and make for decent stop light racer while keeping the MPGs in the earlier to mid 40s.

I figure with the W210s 3 liter engine that's as smooth as the one I've test driving I'd be able to knock the socks of of 250 ft/pds to the ground and keep around 35 mpgs or better too.

Thanx much

The Finns have done some amazing things with 603 and 606 engines. I think a large aftermarket intercooler would be the next step after a chip/reprogramming.

After a chip the E300 can lay down 210hp and 350ft/lbs. Impressive numbers, can't wait to get mine done.

Acording to SpeedtuningUSA, I got the more potent chip. Also, if I wanted to, with the increased fuel going in, I could up the boost. I have been thinking of a manually controlled boost boostvalve. With a T3 Garret, the ford system would push the air into the wastegate which would fully open at the preset pressure. I removed the controllers and hooked up one from boostvalve and it made quite a difference. It would let the turbo spool up till it reached the set point and then release instead of letting it slowly open the wastegate. The wife doesn't want me to do that so I suppose that is not going to happen, for now.

- Anyone cut the cat out on the 98 or 99 E300?

On the TDI's the cat didn't really make a difference when it came to smoke if you put enough air into the intake.

- Anyone know what the max PSI a E300's turbo can take?

Was thinkin about getting a high milage one for myself and selling the TDI if the mods on the wifes 300TD works.

After reading some post about the 5spd transmission it sounds like it will be able to handle the torque too, sounds like it is a differently geared AMG transmission.

Love those diesels !!!

I would install an EGT guage before pumping up the boost and adding fuel. Melting a 606 down would be very expensive.

The Finns are up to 500hp out of these!

cutting the cat out is illegal in some places and not really worth it. Granted you'd never get caught, but a cat serves a purpose, it doesnt' restrict flow that much and is an APC device, just leave it.

It's illegal anywhere in the US by federal law. State laws may not enforce it, but they can if they so choose.

While that may be true, there is also a side twist to the question. To cut or to pay big bucks to replace.

Wow I just found this thread guys. Very interesting. I have never heard mention of any 'finns' however in my reading today it seems they are mentioned a few times in relation to upping horsepower out of these engines. Where is there more info on the mods they have done, or parts available? Unfortunately I only speak english.

I have the speedtuning chip and subsequently have an offensive amount of smoke under WOT, even with a new air filter. It should be noted that I am under slightly more load though, due to reducing my overall gear ratio with the larger diameter tire/wheel combo I have, which will cause more smoke. In any case, I'm also interested in hearing about any info on how much the stock turbo can take and what it makes now psi wise. Are there bolt in kits for larger intercoolers, turbos, or air intakes? Info please!
