European 300TD?

I think I may have just missed out on a great deal: this '83 300TD on eBay didn't even go past the $5K mark!

Does anyone out there know anything about this car? It seems to be Euro-spec, with a manual climate control system, Euro headlights and no sunroof. And what's with the lack of badges on the rear gate?!

Damn, I feel dumb for not bidding on this: I thought it would climb to $8 or $9K

If it was a Euro 300TD, it may have been a non-turbo;

if it was just listed as a W123 diesel wagon, it may even have been a 4 cylinder. I saw several such in Norway earlier in June, along with many W123 gasburner wagons.

It could have been a turbo, "TheBenzBar" has a 300TDT Euro, it's beautiful.

Turbos were offered in Europe. In fact, here's the buildsheet of, and pics of a 1984 300TDT originally sold in Germany.

You can go to this Russian MB VIN check website, and for most Mercedes-Benzes from 1980 to 2005, you can get the entire buildsheets, in either Russian or English.

If you look at the pics with the build sheet, there are a couple of oddities. What is that black box under the hood (behind washer fluid reservoir), and look at the Economy gauge on the cluster.

black box

is abs. i am wondering how the economy guage works in a turbodiesel. in my gas benz it is a simple vacuum guage. push the gas and the needle goes for the red.
