The car had something he knew was wrong or he would not have objected.

hey all,

yeah i'm selling a 300TD for asking $5450. flexible. i have over $12000 total invested in it and searched for four months before i found it to buy in the first place. personally, the money means little to me. i earn the purchase price for this car in about 20 hours. but i'm not letting it go for free. and i don;t think owners of the functional rustfree diesel benz's should let theirs go for a song, because what do you think will happen to the depleting supply of good diesel turbo wagons? they are going to be corrupted maybe and disappear.

my buyer is someone with the money to keep it up or someone with the wrenching skill to do it themselves. since i pay for my open-checkbook upkeep i am investing the time and money in a more collectable model of benz, however much i love this one.

these are only thoughts, i don't care if it does sell, cause i drive it!

Yours has the AC working.. right ?
This one was in Houston and going to be in Austin... had a new compressor 5 years ago ... but did not perform well...
and I expect from all you have replaced on yours that you would have no problem letting someone do a PP inspection... right ?
very different situations...

I said the deal is off.
You did the right thing. Either he has reservations about the condition of certain items or he has another buyer in the wings.

Either way, if you can't verify it's condition, it must be heavily discounted. You would never pay that much for a wagon on e-bay without checking it out. So be it.

Well, I did not get one on my 240 manual trans.... it was using a quart of oil per 300 miles... fully disclosed by the seller....
But I only paid $500 for it and drove it home from Arlington.... and it runs 75 all day long.... a few things like not keeping the oil level so high on the dipstick, replacing a dinged copper washer on the drain plug and fixing the valve cover gasket.... and I have a real bargain...
But at $4700 that is very different... AMEN to getting independant inspections...

The smoker would be a good little fairly cheap wagon for him if the smoking thing could just be fixed.
Matter of fact, if the smoking were fixed I can't swear that I wouldn't sell the '85 instead.
Randy, I wish you would go ahead and fix Passion Flower so I would have a good clue about what is wrong with mine. What a bad time to buy your new Estate.....

I suspect you are still interested in that station wagon. Get a responsible substitute buyer to approach him and ask to have the car checked out prior to purchase pretending he knows little about diesels. The non emotional involvement of a third party helps as well. If the car checks out well and again the low miles are verified not just quoted he can make the deal for you. You now have to be a little carful now as the owner rejected your prior check out for some reason. Personalitys come into play sometimes but if I had a 108k mile original in good shape believe it or not I would encourage a check. I own a 300d with 130,000 miles on it. The milage verified pretty easy but I discovered a lot of odd work it required.(many dollars) Posiibly from age as it is a 1977. It really pays to walk sometimes as well and the check by a mercedes mechanic helps verify the milage as if he starts finding stuff that should not be bad yet he will tell you the milage does not appear original. Or just tons of deffered maintenance. You cannot put the miles back in a car as it is just too expensive a proposition in general. Just my opinions though.

With that attitude, I would have been tempted to give him a poke in the chops...on principle, of course.

Actually, at one point he did say if I wanted to get the inspection, then he'd sell me the car, but not for the agreed 4750. He'd raise the price. So he was being flexible, in a way. An ass-wipe sort of way.

a while back there was a thread regarding a member asking an ebay seller if he could come inspect the car prior to bidding. was advertized as a LOW low mileage 300D in excellent shape i think. anyway the owner said no to an inspect and claimed that the inspection would be unfair to other ebay bidders who were too far away....

anyway, this all was absurb and it was crystal clear that the guy must have had something to hide. why would he refuse inspection on a low mileage car he wants large $$$$ for??? if the buyer won't let you inspect it then i would steer clear of it on principle. this is not a once in a lifetime chance, don;t let him screw with you.

however, i like the idea mentioned of sending a friend to check it out and ask for an inspect. even though there are likely to be problems with the car or the owner, you are probably going to have something to laugh at over beers!

another worthless two cents
