It was "muffler man," what can you expect? Only time I've ever taken my benz to any kind of generic shop, and hopefully the only time I ever will.

Now this may seem like a stupid question but will making you car strait piped effect preformance and sound differently in every body/engine model, or is it pretty much the same all around?

It will vary based on model, because the stock exhausts were not always the same. So it depends if you remove only parts of the system or the whole thing. I'd think that most would sound pretty similar with a fully open exhaust (all straight pipes), as the only differences would be pipe diameter and routing, which shouldn't affect the sound as much. I wonder if a 5cyl sounds different from a 6cyl...

Its BS......... the only way you could burn exhaust valves is with no exhaust manifold when cold air hitting hot exhaust valves would do bad things.

In some states a turbo is considered to be a muffler. (so I was told) Also, the military 2 1/2 ton trucks have a streight pipe from the trubo back. I immagine the 5 and 10 ton trucks would be the same as well, but I have never seen one up close.
I played with a streight pipe on my '90 Dodge W/ 5.9 Cummins, it sounded ok at an idle, but too loud at full song, even when empty... so I put a glass pack from summit racing on it, which was cheap, and came in 3'' size which is what I wanted to do. The truck is always loud, the motor make's quite a racket, and now you can hear some exhaust note in the cab when pulling a load, but it is not too bad.
some day I will do the same on the 84 300 TDT, but not till the present exhaust system gives up.

Straight pipe onn My 300SD

I run str pipe on my 80 300SD, is not all that loud, the pipe ends on the bottom left rear door.
Can be annoying during first start, the noxious fume can come back if window not fully closed.
Other than that is not all bad either.
So if u have turbo, no need muffler.
Sure u have to be prudent , not to rev it up when around peace officer, or else they may wanna a safety inspection on your car.

I can't compare whats like to orig muffler. When i bought it, she has no exhaust sys at all. Just 6 inches down pipe. It was a bit louder, still can live with, now ofcourse is much quieter.
