Are new injectors really that beneficial ?
Can new injectors really increase noticible power and fuel mileage ? Can they reduce minimal smoke down to zero ?
I know that many of you have changed your injectors so share your results with me. Thanks http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/D100025841BOS.JPG |
First off, leave well enough alone, unless you know you have one or two injectors that are causing an engine to lope at idle and might be attributing to poor fuel economy or something.
rebuilt matched injectors are the way to go. Search for the subject India and injectors and you'l see why ;) |
I changed the injectors on my 240D not too long ago. I had them balanced by TOMJ (forum member) and the car did get more MPG but it wasn't faster. He also matched the injectors up with german nozzles and balanced them. He did a great job but I just changed the injectors for the heck of it.... they were not bad. Mileage went up by 3mpg

I would pull the injectors and check them. If the tip shows serious visible wear I would put in rebuilds. My one mercedes maint book from mercedes source talks about how to visually inspect them. It is probably best to have a source for injectors near by so if you pull them and they need replaced you can go get them and not have to put in new crush washers to put the injectors back in.
New injectors improve the spray pattern causing cleaner burning meaning more power, better fuel economy and less carbon crap. |
Hrm... I may have to get a few sets next time I'm out in the yards.
What special tool do I require? |
injectors
i have changed a lot of them through the years chasing problems. i cant think of a single time that the change solved the problem.

You remove the lines with (I think) a 17MM Open End. Then take some pliers and remove the cloth lines. Next take a 27MM Socket and crank the injectors off. I have messed up the top side of my hand when they finally give so be careful. It should be noted that if you remove (or even de-torque) the injectors you should probably put new heat shields in. --Matt |
it is crazy trying to get off the old ones if they have never been off. I had to use a big long pipe and they finally gave in.

27mm deep. Sounds like common sense but I for some odd reason got a 27 standard. |
I think I can get a core set for me for $40... is that a fair price to you guys? So I could send out to have rebuilt?

My experience with VW and GM diesels is changing injectors makes a large difference. New/rebuilt reduces smoke, smoothes out the idle, improves power, and reduces injector noise. The VW injectors look just like the MB and have the same style heatshields. The GM's look very similar but no heatshields. All made by Bosch. They seem to last about 100K on the VW and GM. When I had the MB apart for the headgasket I took the injectors to an diesel injection service shop and had them checked for pop and pattern. They tested good so I put them back in. My advice is remove them and have them tested. It is sometimes free or pretty cheap, the MB's cost $20 to test, and at least you will know they are in good shape. RT

Injectors will not solve major problems(keeping good injectors might prevent a few). The condition of your cylinders, rings, head gasket and faulty injection pumps are still the main causes of bad smoke. However especially with the 240D's you need those cars in top condition to get decent performance. Some bio webpage out there was selling injectors with special modifications for wvo which seemed odd. It has been a while since I have seen that page.

What about removeing and cleaning the injectors while putting new "seals" (the washer looking piece), would that benefit the injectors i mean i assume there woulr be nothing like reaplceing the injectors but if they really just needed cleaned would it work sililarly?
