I haven't been able to start it up yet (GP troubles) but I notice that the passenger side of the engine is fairly damp with oil, just under the manifolds and behind the starter. Is there anything in that area that I should look at while I'm waiting for parts to get the engine running? It doesn't look like it's leaking down from the valve cover gasket.

The rest of the engine looks pretty good.

That makes sense. I was hoping not though because it's odd that it's only one side. Does the oil pressure for the cam come up that side? Would re-torquing help?

One thing I noticed that doesn't make too much sense is that there is a pocket in the passenger side engine mount bracket and it's fill of oil. It's about 3 or 4 inches away from the block. I guess the oil could be dripping from the air cleaner though.

Did any of these engines have something to catch the oil in the crankcase ventilation hose?

Thanks for the help.

So you will do pretty much whatever you have to to avoid cleaning your engine compartment ?

Well, just avoid spraying the IP .... close tolerances make it subject to damage from thermal shock.

You could do a lot of work but first clean out that breather and air cleaner box. Then drive it for a few days. If oil saturates air cleaner box again in say two days. It possibly is a pretty worn engine unfortunatly. Does happen through neglect or high milage on most engines eventually. Use of a higher viscosity oil in spring/summer and fall does help somewhat to lessen consumption. Thinking a straight 40-50 rather than a multigrade. Would be nice if just leaking for the majority of your loss instead .
