Question Starter bolt torque?

For some reason, I have been having problems with the starter bolts backing out. (Nearly left me stranded in the parking lot after the last GTG.) It usually occurs about once every six months. I have used some blue threadlocker and retorqued them.

The Haynes manual lists 18 ft/lbs. Isn't that a little low? Can someone with the CD verify this is correct?

I don't use a torque wrench in such applications, but 18 sounds WAAaay low on those bolts. They're pretty hefty, just cinch 'em down good and forget it.

Good luck,

" (Nearly left me stranded in the parking lot after the last GTG.)"

Now that would be awful timing for that to happen....

My starter on my 240 was developing internal shorting problems due to the small bolts which hold the main brush cage in place... When I went to change the starter one of the bolts was not even finger tight...
As long as the starters usually last a drop of red locktite is wonderful insurance. I quit using blue a long time ago.. and on a normal size bolt the red only adds 5 ft lbs to the torque necessary to break it loose ... but will keep it from backing off by itself...

Especially since I parked in a different parking lot than everyone else and they were gone by the time I got to my car. A loose starter makes an awful screech.

Well, I did the best I could to torque them to 45 ft/lbs. We will see if that lasts a little longer.

Ray where did you get this number? I have all the service manuals and the Technical data manual. But the SM does not cover the starter at all , that I can find!

I'm curious as well. To remove those screws required well over 100 ft.-lbs. I could not budge them with a 1/2" ratchet. They are something like 12 mm screws and would typically require at least 80 ft.-lbs. to achieve proper stretch.

I believe those are 10mm screws (the other trans to engine are 12mm) and I also have 55Nm for those screws. The trans manuals I have from Mitchell and ATSG both have it.

I wanted to respond to this in case someone does a search. The problem is the starter front support bracket was entirely missing on my car due to a previous owner/mechanic shortcut. As heavy as that starter is, no wonder they were always backing out.

Went to the dealer and ordered another, about $30.

BTW, thanks guys for the torque info.

woa! I remember starting up a detroit 6.2 after replacing the starter, without the front bracket attached because I couldn't find some fastener. The thing shook like a bowl full of jelly, and I had just tightened the 2 hefty rear bolts TIGHT. I shut it off real quick and found that fastener I'm somewhat surprised that starter wasn't coming off every other day, but I think the 617 is a lot smoother than the 6.2.

I am missing the lower starter bolt on my 300SD - would like to get one reasonably if anyone has some lying around.

On the one car that has had a rebuilt starter, I used Threadlocker Red. I am under the impression that TL Red requires heating with a torch (briefly) before it will release. And I did find that to be the case when I had to get the same start off for some reason I forget now. But once heated with a torch they came out easily.

So for my part I would recommend Threadlocker Red on those big starter bolts - they wont' come out and when it IS time for them to come out again (10-20 years down the road?) the threads will have no corrosion.

To correct my previous post - those bolts are M12 x 85mm long. Torque is 65Nm. Loctite blue is more than sufficient. I don't use any loctite and it does not loosen at all. IMHO, Red loctite there is asking for trouble. Strip that M10 allen when you try to remove it and you'll be in a world of hurt.
