just bought a '78 240D for $700...

It's got 246k miles, and has a little cosmetic damage (ok, more than just a little, but livable), but seemed like a good deal. The shifting is fairly tight, the engine is no louder than I've heard in other 240D's, and I've found a wealth of information (including you guys) and parts on the web.

Since I'm not a mechanic, or even close (graphic designer), I will probably be lurking around here asking some dumb questions. Please have patience. And, if you ever need any help figuring out any Apple computer problems, I'm your man!

Congrats on your new purchase! Is it an auto or a manual? If it hasn't been checked over yet read through the posts about checking fuel filters, oil, valve adjustments so that your car is maintained in good running shape.

Also....do you know how to network a G3 on OS9 to a Windows 2000 Server shared directory?

What kind of cosmetic damage are you talking about? It might be pretty easy to fix some of it yourself....

heh heh congrats! and welcome

ive been an apple guy for a while and in january i gave myself two presents--

a 1979 240D(white w/ blue interior- 129k) and a G5 iMac

both pretty fun white boxes, one is just much much faster than the other! i bought some vintage apple stickers for the mercedes because the modern white logo sticker is just not cool enough for an old benz-- if you want one i can find them and send it to ya=)

btw: what do you think aboutthe intel thing, huh?

First of all, I LOVE this car! I love how loud it is and how slow it is. It makes me kinda glad my Chevy cavalier's engine blew up.

As for networking a G3 to a Windoze shared server, I wouldn't recommend infecting the G3 with that environment. Beyond that, my networking experience is limited to a G5 Xserve my company uses.

G5 iMacs are very, very nice (and much faster than a 240D!)

I would love to have one of those six color apple stickers.

Pics are coming later, but I can sum up the cosmetic damage. There's a scrape down the passenger's side, and some of the interior next to the back glass is peeling off. The driver's seat has a broken spring, but it's not too bad, and there's a missing hubcap. I bought a set of 4 unpainted hub caps on ebay for $10. I'll either have to find a way to mask the mercedes logo and paint the rest green or just replace my 3 green caps with the new 4 (probably going with the latter).

LOL & congrats! It amazes me what people get excited about. Before you take exception to that statement please realize I recently purchase a $1000 300D that I intend to return to service...So....I guess I amaze myself as well

Found it not too bad to paint hubcaps with very narrow masking tape. Remember some cars came with unpainted hubcaps I believe. just preffered the logo painted myself.
