SDL park brake pedal, just an old car?
New problem on the SDL at 272K miles. I release the park brake and the pedal doesn't jump up enough to turn off the brake light. I have to pull it up for the light to go out and it stays out. It might just be a return spring, haven't checked yet. I hope it's not something that requires dropping the exhaust system and prop shaft shield.

Mine sticks sometimes and does this but tapping it up with my foot generally solves it, the parking brake on our '83 is so loose it doesn't really hold the car and also the pedal is floppy so the brake light is always on......we'll look into it eventually....

Sixto,
You probably need to adjust the slack in the cable...should be a turnbuckle for that. If the cable isn't slack you might need to adjust the parking brake shoes.

My 87 SDL sometimes has this exact issue. I look forward to the answer. Stephen

Well my parking brake doesn't work so I removed the electrical switch at the pedal. pewph, no more light. I think I kept it around but I could always go to the junkyard and pull one off a door jamb. It's the same switch you know. I consider my parking brake to be one of the lowest priority fixes for me.
Thanks David

Wheel chocks cost a lot less than fixing the parking brakes

Mine did the same thing and here is what I found:
There is a cable coming off of each rear drum and going up to this big metal thing. Then one cable comes off that to your pedal. I don't know the proper name for this metal thing so I will call it that! Mine was rusted up from lack of use, I just used a hammer and a bunch of oil to get it working again. Since I use the parking brake everytime I park it hasn't rusted up again. I guess a cable could also be stretched or broken. I think MB specs 3-4 clicks of the pedal before the brake us fully engaged.

I can click mine all the way to the floor....and all I get is reasonable force on the left rear wheel, it will still slide on a steep hill as none of the other wheels seem to have a working brake The 83 engages both rear wheel brakes but the pedal also goes all the way to the floor with very little if any brake force.....its gotten worse over the past year...

Also, on any car, ya gotta' use 'em or lose 'em! Our Grand Marquis did the same thing, I guess I was the first one to use the parking brake in years... silly habit I have, using that brake. Best Regards, Jim |

In the rust belt I would have to agree with y'all, but Sixto is in a nearly salt free environment...I say nearly 'cause he is closer to the ocean and I'm sure there is some salt air. I still think in Sixto's case the cable needs to be adjusted at the turnbuckle. I had the same issue with my salt free 108.

pawoSD I also replaced the shoes and a bunch of other stuff back their. 3-4 clicks is all I need to hold the car.
I am in the habit of useing the brake everytime I park the car.
