OT - Latest German Purchase

So, the other day I bought a green and yellow tractor for my farm....made in Iowa? Not a chance. This one was manufactured in Mannheim.

Any pics and model #s? The only German tractors I've seen over here are the old Porsche aircooled diesels from the 50's- 60's--sleek. My neighbor had an CASE-International that was built in England, but with German injection and electronics, thankfully.

Also, the same neighbor had a JD 2020 he brought over to my shop with a crankcase full of coolant. Pulled the pan, pressurized the cooling system and determined the piston liners had cavitation pits that worked clean through into the crankcase--change that coolant regularly or else! I recently sold my '44 Ford 2N for peanuts.

It's a John Deere 2040 (1978 model). I just found out today that these engines are prone to cavitation but the oil looks good...I got it cheap and it definitely has some 'issues' but I don't think perforated liners is one of them.

Pics here.

Is that engine also German made? The 2020 in question was a '68 US-spec model, which was apparently prone to cavitation, so maybe you're ok.

I can't tell where the engine was made, Germany too, I'm guessing...I just got it Saturday, worked her for about 2 hours and the hydraulics crapped out. Neither the pickup strainer or filter was clogged and I believe that the fluid level is correct. Fortunately, I have all the shop manuals.

I started out trying to troubleshoot the open center system but now, after reading the manuals closer, I'm thinking that this unit is a closed center hydraulic system...I didn't click on that until this morning...it was VERY hot at the farm this weekend and I'm realizing now that my cognitive abilities were'nt exactly 100% at the time.

The learning curve is fairly steep right now.

My '68 (or so) Ford 3000 diesel has hydraulics with "opportunities" also. I just changed the fluid (white ), and I think the hydraulic fluid may be migrating into tranny. Also leaking down one of the 3 pt arms. But at least it doesn't smoke. I need a new seat more than anything.
Have fun with that thing. Good size loader too....

I sold my beloved 8N 2 years ago. Quite possibly my most beloved mechanical contraption ever! I bought it, and sold it for more than either of my wagons.....

John Deere built a big factory at Mannheim quite a few years ago. I toured it once. Design happens here in Iowa and Illinois, but JD has a large market in Europe, especially for smaller equipment.
