throttle fix-- DIY??

The plastic clip on the end of the throttle thing (what is it called?) that controls how the gas pedal interacts with the injectors & tranny (and please explain this to me) broke off and my gas pedal no longer works. Can I fix this myself and what do I need to do so. Should I replace the entire mechanism that the clip is attached to? Any info and/or photos would be appreciated.

throttle fix-- DIY??

found a diagram -- it is the accelerator control linkage 230 in the pic. I finally found it in the maintenance & repair manual. The fix is in there but i'm still unclear. Maybe someone has done this before??

There was a recall on that part in, oh, about 1990. It is replaced with an equivalent metal part. Too many diesels were found idling at the side of the road I'm am amazed your car made it this far before failing.

Here's a link to the recall, only took a minute to find it using Google: http://www.automotive.com/1987/12/mercedes-benz/300-series/recalls/index.html

Suggest you contact your local MB dealer to check if the recall is still open on your car.

I love this forum!! Thanks Jcyuhn! I called an indy this A.M. He told me to bring the diagram. His mechanic knew right away what the problem was. He said he thought he had seen the last of these problems years ago. I asked how MB could let such an important function rely on this plastic piece. (In all fairness tho it lasted 17 years.) He said they didn't make the mechanism like this anymore-- but aparrently he didn't remember the recall. He had a clip and said it was the last one and that I was lucky he remembered where it was, Then he showed me how to put it on.
The blessing in this is that I was going to make a trip to Chicago this morning so I'm fortunate that it broke last nite in my driveway instead of in the passing lane on the Turnpike today. I'm going to check with the dealer to see if I can get the metal piece. Thanks again!
