240D missing vacuum lines?

Good evening all.

1978 240D manual trans.

I noticed that there are two hose barbs on this car with no hoses attached. One seems to be a sensor in the thermostat housing on the upper passenger side of the engine and the other is a round canister type thing on top of the IP.

Should they have hoses, and if so where should they connect to? I checked the sticky vacuum diagram posts but couldn't find the info for this car.

Would either of these contribute to difficult starting?

Thanks

difficult starting

is generally bad glow plugs, low compression or a fuel problem = excess/lack of.

Best advice:
#1. Adjust your valves.
There are many threads on valve adjust, it is not a tough DIY.
#2. Check for power to glow plugs and replace any bad ones.
This thread may help.
Glow Plug Testing?
#3. Replace fuel filters and repair any fuel leaks.

id like to know what hooks to the connection on the silver canister on top of the ip-- my car has nothing connected to it!

the part i am talking about looks almost exactly like the mechanical fuel pump on an old vw.

I would suggest a separate thread + year, make, model.

Wild guess:
240D without turbo, the device will be atmospheric pressure compensation valve.
A picture would really help.

I think the 82 240D vac diagrams apply here as well. From looking at this diagram (sticky) and my own 82 240D, I believe the thermostat housing sensor actually controls the egr. I've disabled egr, and taken out all the vacuum lines related to it.

I think the round thing atop the ip is the "vacuum control valve"--it should have a green "surge damper" connected to it, and from there, link to the vacuum supply (big line going from vacuum pump to brake booster).

I don't believe either of them are related to starting.

Good luck.

The cannister on top of the IP is the altitude compensator and should not have anything connected to it. I don't know about the passenger's side of the engine. The 82 diagrams don't really apply, as there were a lot of changes between 79 and 80, and again in either 81 or 82 when they added EGR.
