Seperate forum for 'check engine lite' type diesels??

Respectfully, I really have not been here very long, and I don't know what year to propose as a cutoff, but I keep seeing more and more questions about sensors, lites and computers that I've never heard of AND more importantly never WANT to know about...

My 2 reasons for owning my benz are 1. Style and 2. Simplicity.(AKA I can fix it 95% of the time)

I don't know how much technology is shared by my 1980 123 and a 1995 300d, but are they similar enough to coexist in Diesel discussion?

Certainly don't want to alienate anyone, please don't get me wrong...

I'd post in vintage mercedes, but that place is a ghost town.

thanks,
Robert

Talking

Amen to that! I've been plagued by check engine messages. I just picked up a new computer to deal with some of it because I'm tired of going to the dealer to deal with the idiotic messages the E300D (96) generates. I got rid of the king of the error message - the Gwagen - what a lemon!

Just wait for the E400 CDI, imagine the sensors on that baby! Just hope none are on the side of the block.

Speaking of sensors, WTF did Cummins decide to put the oil pressure sensor BEHIND the ECM sensor wiring harness and the fuel temp sensor BEHIND THE ECM on the N14!?!?!? Good thing I love my job.

I think that separating the forums is a mistake. Too much granularity causes lots of problems. With one diesel discussion forum you will have more viewers of your posts, thus more chance for a solution with one diesel forum IMHO.

Good luck,

Seperate forums isn't a good idea.

Get used to CDI's because they are the future. When I first came to this forum it really was a W123, 617, 616 forum; frankly some fresh problems are nice. You can only read so many no start, smoking, and overheating posts.

I have seen the future and I don't want it/can't afford it/can't even comprehend the wiring diagram.

seriously, Thanks for the thoughtful replies, I'm not a fan of 'seperate but equal', and I understand about keeping all of the resources in one spot, but I'd expect to see an increasing divide between the computerized and the not... theres simply no commonality beyond the star on the hood.

cheers,
Robert

The check engine light came on in my dad's (1987) camaro and he put a piece of duct tape over it.

It's been six years and the car runs fine with almost 200000 miles on it.

If you start different forums for electronic controlled diesels vs. mechanical injection pump diesels, then why not have a separate forum for electronic controlled transmissions vs. hydromechanical transmissions? Then if you have that forum, why not have another for automatic climate controls vs. manual climate controls? ETC., ETC., ETC.?

Where would it stop? You just can't break it down to that level and if you did you would have very little traffic in each forum thus limiting the potential help.

If you want the correct attention when you need help with a problem, put some thought into the title of the post so that it is descriptive and gets the attention of those with the needed experience.

Good luck,

I'd vote for a single Diesel Forum. I'm interested in both old and new.

Plus, I might want to see if anyone has had any success retrofitting OBD-II electronics onto a turbo'd and chipped 240D.

Who knows what the max HP/Torque is on these iron wonders....

I agree with the single forum. One of these years we will inevitably will have to update to a newer model. What better place than here for reading and learning about the newer models. When that time comes, we will know better what to look for in case of problems.

I you don't want to read those posts, don't click on them. Can't get much simpler than that! Only 3 out of 40 posts to skip over on page one.

Single forum is the way to go,the more folks who browse that one forum, the more replies you can expect.

When I recently purchased my '98 E300 for a favorable price there existed a host of electronic issues and failure codes that frightened the former owner no end,not to mention the dealership's pricey quotes for service.

However by posting questions and most importantly searching the archives I have successfully solved ALL of these gremlins{for the moment,anyway}
