Water Pump going out?

1982 300SD, 154k

Had a puddle directly underneath the front of the engine, behind the radiator, so am thinking it's the pump. It's dripping down the front of the oil pan, didn't see any coolant on the rad hoses, will look more closely after I clena it up to see where it's coming from.

Anyone had problems using a NAPA waterpump? $51.99 is the cost. If not, which one from Fastlane, Laso for $80 or Geba for $51.

Anything else I should change while I'm at it? Thermostat, etc?

Also, I recently had it in to my mechanic for AC service, and they told me my fan clutch is shot, and recommened I replace it. Any suggestions on where to buy? Fastlane?

Thanks,

Adam

water pump

if you can get an angle on it you should be able to see it coming out the weep hole. no advice on a brand. i like the cast blades over the pressed stamped steel.

I would use nothing but a rebuilt pump from the factory. Maybe the ones from Fastlane are - don't know. Heard of too many folks who used an aftermarket pump have overheating problems because the impellers don't have the same clearance as the originals and don't move the coolant like they should. A rebuilt from the factory should not be any more than you mentioned, but of course, it's been awhile since I bought one.

Laso or Geba pump?

I would also like to know which one is reccommended, as I am going to change mine out. One is more $ than the other, but I don't want to have to change it again for a lot of miles.

I think I put a laso on mine last July when I replaced it. The old one was weeping, clanking like cans, and looked real corroded.... The Laso one has worked perfectly ever since.

Updated info.

I haven't replaced the pump yet, as I have not seen any coolant leaking since the first discovery. Any thoughts as to what would cause coolant to leak and then go away?

extra pressure on a tiny leak may have caused a one-time leak, but you'll probably see it again. Look carefully at the weep hole and the hoses, good chance you find it. Also, if you replace the water pump, it's a perfect time to replace that short hose (roughly 2" long) between the water pump and thermostat housing. The thermostat gasket gets real hard and can leak also. Use lots of penetrant on the T-stat housing bolts first.

Replace the water pump, Laso is what I just installed, bronze impeller.
And the price is not worth the few $ difference.
Fix now, or pay the tow.
When mine went out, (like yours slight leak, then quite),then it was a gusher.
I think this is what is called a PM (Preventive Maintenence).
