well...im gonna track down my vacuum leaks

i know the diagrams are up at the top in a sticky, please dont flame me!

i have been putting it off because ive heard bad things about the cutoff valve killing engines. how likely is that to happen? i could most likely install it myself, but i am afraid that i will futz it up and ruin a perfectly good low mileage engine!

it should be said that when i did the brakes i could NEVER get those little plates to sit the right way and i had t keep flipping and turning thm till my daddy came and helped

so now that youall know my "i dont know which way is up" issue, should i attempt this fix myself? what would a dealer/indy charge for the job? the risk isnt worth the couple hundred i wouldnt think!

also-- autozone rents vacuum testers? my dad said he has one, but im almost sure he wont have an adapter thatll fit, hell, im not even sure its te right kind of vacuum tester!

Look, Mityvac vac testers are only $28 to $32 bucks. You are required by law to have one if you own one of these old MB's.
I would suggest adult supervision until you become more experienced, however vac testing is very straightforward. That being said, if you replace the vac. shutoff valve on IP I would recommend help from someone who has some experience. You don't want the engine running away.
But basic testing should be no problem....

I've heard people talk before about these engines "running away" and getting ruined, don't they all come with the emergency cutoff switch on the throttle linkage?

OK first.

what car?

We really need to know year and model.

I think you have solved 90% of your trouble shooting. You said that your engine stops normally when you turn on your AC system. When the AC system is off it routes the vacuum thru the airswithces and then to elements. By turning your AC on your "disconnecting" certain units and lines.

If we knew the year and model we could help more.

That tells you first of all that your IP shutoff is fine, it just doesn't get enough vacuum until you turn on the AC. What is happening is whatever is leaking is being deactivated when you turn on the AC. Kind of an accidental bypass. Sometimes folks have to lock their doors to get their car to shutoff.
Get a Mityvac. Study the vacuum diagrams. Follow your vac lines from pump to firewall and into car. Systematically rule them out. At the firewall, usually brown is to key switch, then from keyswitch back to IP shutoff. Solid yellow is door lock. Green is climate control. Problem is, I don't know about your particular car. 240's usually have manual AC controls, so.....
We cannot tell you "Hey, this is what it is". We can only equip you with enough info for you to find it yourself. Fair enough??
Keep us posted.
