Last week I hit 92- speedometer only goes to 85, but the Garmin StreetPilot GPS I have attached to the dash registered 92. The car was smooth but loud. She seemed to have more power available- the accelerator was nowhere near the floor.

I wonder what the top speed is for a 300D with manny tranny and 3.69... I have only an 85mph speedo so I'll likely never know for sure. Just like now, driving by tachometer in my 300TD.

hmm.. we just had our diesel funrun here in the philippines and we had diesel MBs from a 200D to a 300TDT

During our convoy, one of our members, as he explained it, got sleepy, on our 80KPH convoy.. so he sped up.. and overtook the lead car (a 200D euro manual). His car was a 240D Column shift, euro with ACC (Dubai i think).. sped up to 140KPH.. guess what.. the 200D was hot on its tail.. and not even smoking... we had a 240D US version with us.. and it couldnt keep up.. i was in my 300TD (euro matic)..and true enough. .the speedo was registering around 140KPH... i was suprised that a 240D can speed up so fast (A/T at that).. and more suprised that the 200D was there on its tail!... and all the while i thought a 200D was a dog to drive!...

what's my point in this thread? hehee. a member's 240D could hit 140KPH..with still some to boot!..

edit: by the way.. all cars are 123 models.

Reading redbarons post gave me an idea. We could have a 240D race on public roads and not even have to worry about drawing too much attention from the highway patrol. In Texas they usually don't even blink if you're doing only 10MPH over the speed limit, and sometimes you have to be going much faster than that to get their attention.

Have a great day,

This is a regular stock 240D with 300,000 miles, going slightly downhill on the Alaska Highway:

http://homepage.mac.com/grozier/resources/100mph.html

I acheived this speed relatively frequently during that drive. It corresponds to the maximum engine speed (5,100 rpm) in top gear.

5100 rpm? I thought the redline was 4600rpm for the OM616? It it a manual or an auto?

Manual - the later cars may have had higher redlines?

Yeah...how can you have an "exhibition of speed" in a 240D...........thats an oxymoron if there ever was one...

Like having a stoplight drag race in one......how could you tell?

In Denver I've hit 100 with a little accelerator margin to go. Turbos rock.

The Gurkha I drive has the most un aerodynamic body which weighs a hefty 1783Kg, with the OM 616 turbo, I recently touched 95mph while racing a wiseguy in the Indian version of Ford Endevour which comes with a Mazda 2.5 turbo intercooled 4 cylinder, not a bad show for an engine which is from another era, the Mazda is a 3 valves per cylinder job with all electronic doo dads and liquid cooled intercooler.

The only mods I have on my OM 616 turbo is no muffler and ram air mod to the air filter.

Somewhere between 85 and 90+. My brother cruises with the speedometer pegged on the majority of his highway trips.

You people accross the pond seem to have different Mercs. My 240 4 sp manual hit 160kph (100mph) everytime I tried and the 300D (617 non turbo) hit about 175kph (109mph). Heck, a budy of mine has a 200D stock, barely going, but can hit 140kph (87mph).

Well at least you can't get in to much trouble for speeding.

93mph, limited by a 1:1 gear tranny and 3.69 diff.

BTW, my 240D will do 0-60 in 15.3 seconds, and 0-85 in 20 seconds.
