Angry So yeah...I can't get my 83 300D TurboDiesel

to turn off...

the previous owner told me to hold down the window button and play with that a little bit, then told me to turn it off, wait to hear the air let out, then take the key out and play with the window button.

Every single time I have ended up having to pop the hood and hit the stop button.

any ideas?

I searched but couldn't find anything

I don't see how playing with an electric window would help the vacuum shutoff. Try revving the engine to, say, 2500-3000 rpm and taking your foot off the pedal as you turn the key; this worked well for me when I was having vacuum pump problems. The pump pulls less vacuum at idle, so by revving it you pull more vacuum than is being leaked and the car shuts off.

Plastic MityVacs are cheap at AutoZone; vacuum diagnosis is pretty simple. Start plugging it into various lines under the hood until you find the one that won't hold (door locks are a likely suspect), then plug and/or repair the leak.

Good luck, and don't despair.

the main problem with fixing it is....I don't even know what a vacuum line looks like much less where they are at under a hood and i'd be kind of nervous about touching it.

I will try the revving though

(The window trick used to work, really!!!)

Fixing a vacuum problem in these diesels is not rocket science. If you are uncomfortable with doing the troubleshooting with a Mityvac, find someone to help you who isn't. The time you are spending climbing out and raising the hood to stop your engine will eventually (if it hasn't already) exceed the time it takes to troubleshoot and repair the problem.

The Dark Side of reving the engine to build up vacuum:

It revs up your turbocharger, too, and then that expensive piece of high tech metal spins its way down to a stop after the oil pressure goes away. At least avoid doing the rev trick when the turbo is really hot from being driven hard.

I'm invited to a wedding in September, and the invitation says "Semi-formal" so I think I'll wear the outfit I had on when I went down to the Freightliner dealer to finish the paperwork and pick up my new eighteen wheeler.

Hello,

I think the door lock system on a W126 is independent, with a pump in the trunk.
I would first check to see if the large black vacum line going from vacuum pump to booster is not cracked. You may be able to isolate the leak using a pair of "hose pinch off" pliers on the rubber, not plastic, vacum lines. they can be bought at autozone for a few dollars. you can use a golf tee to plug off whatever you need. in reality all you need is vacuum for the climate control, brake booster, and injection pump shut off. How does the car shift, and does the engine slow down when you remove the key?

good luck.

there is a vac line under the hood likely dislodged. look near the oil filter housing.

even better do a search on the subject under the diesel discussion forum
here

this is one of the most common and most of the time very easily fixed problems with this particular engine.
