Words of Wisdom
I don't know. Some of this might apply to Diesel mechanics.
A Cowboy's Guide to Life _________ <>__________ * Don't name a pig you plan to eat. * Your fences need to be horse high, pig tight, and bull strong. * Life ain't about how fast you run, or how high you climb, but how well you bounce. * Keep skunks, bankers, and lawyers at a distance. * Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. * A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. * Words that soak into your ears are whispered,,,,,,,not yelled. * Meanness don't jest happen overnight. * Don't sell your mule to buy a plow. * Don't corner something that you know is meaner than you. * It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge. * You can't unsay a cruel word. * Every path has a few puddles. * When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. * The best sermons are lived, not preached. * Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway * Don't judge folks by their relatives. * Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. * Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time. * Don't interfere with somethin' that ain't botherin' you none. * Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance. * It's better to be a has-been than a never-was. * The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm. The colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller. * If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'. * If it don't seem like it's worth the effort, it probably ain't. * It don't take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep. * Sometimes you get and sometimes you get got. * The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with watches you shave his face in the mirror every mornin'. * If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around. * Don't worry about bitin' off more 'n you can chew; your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger 'n you think. * Only cows know why they stampede. * Always drink upstream from the herd. * If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there with ya. * Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment. * Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in. |

My Grand Dad was a rancher on the Blanco River and also the smartest man I've yet to meet. He was well read and very analytical.
I lost him while I was in the Army in 1970, but I don't think a day goes by that I don't remember one of his sentences of wisdom because it applies to something I'm dealing with. His was a life of hard work and honor. His handshake was worth more than any airtight contract that the most clever lawyer in the world could ever come up with. Most every one of his sayings could be applied to many things in everyday life and they have served me very well over the years. One of my favorites is; "There was never a horse that couldn't be rode and never a cowboy that couldn't be throwed." In my mind I've heard him say this hundreds of times over the years. It applies so well to lifes challenges and failures. "That's like puttin' a hundred dollar saddle on a ten dollar horse." You can bet I've thought of this one many times when pouring money into an old car. None of the others jump into my mind right now, but I sure do chuckle when I think of some of his jokes and stories. Most of them had an educational morale even if it was off color. There are many people who think of farmers and ranchers as being backwards and ignorant. In reality to be a successful farmer or rancher takes an amazing diversification of skills. My Grandfather owned a microscope and knew all about different bacteria and most of the basics that many people pay a veterinarian to know about. He was an engineer when it came to modifying or building farm equipment. His ledger and accounting skills and his ability to throw numbers around in his head could rival that of an investment banker. Most of all, he knew how to be tough when it was needed while being kind hearted at the right moment. Although a formal education is best, it's not the only way to have "higher education." My Grandfathers library was diverse and complete and when he wasn't out sweating he was in his rocking chair reading. Oh how I miss him. |
