Do your neighbors ever annoy you because you work on your own cars ?

Today I washed my 190D engine in my driveway with gunk degreaser. I did not use alot but it left a colorful film on top of the water that was coming from my driveway onto the street.(I used one can) I had two neighbors complain that it is unsafe and all...... I then proceeded to powerwash my driveway which left the water even dirtier with leaves and dirt. It's not like I drain gallons of fuel and quarts of oil into the street. Normal traffic leaves the road in worse shape with leaking coolant, oil, grease etc.

I live in an upscale area with one of the nicest houses on the block so we are definitely not trash. (maybe not in their eyes). It is getting really annoying knowing that they are all talking about you as you get in and out of your car. I shouldn't really put all my neighbors down, it's only a click of about 5 houses.

I kind of hate living in Jersey. These damn people are freakin babies now a days. I have those type of neighbors that if you spit on the sidewalk they get all "huffy and puffy" with rage. The worst thing is that we are sort of an outcast since all these people are old and stick to clicks. (they have lived here for many years)

Anybody else have crazy annoying old people living next to them that bother you when you work on your car ?

Nope, I don't have neighbors like that,,,,,, any more.

I moved from a house like you describe in a neighborhood like you describe 18 years ago. I now live in the boonies where my nearest neighbor is about a half mile away. The National Guard couldn't chase me back to the city.

Part of your problem is that the environmental extremists have pounded into people the idea that oil or gasoline are as dangerous as Cyanide. I am very environmentally conscious. As a landowner I feel that it is my duty, but there is a point you cross from being environmentally conscious to being environmentally extreme.

That oil on that engine is going to end up in the ground sooner or later. It is absolutely inevitable. I don't say that you should intentionally pollute, but let's expect a little common sense from those neighbors.

Good luck,

I don't care what my neighbors think. I live on a dead end with only 4 houses. One is a never ending project with no sideing, they can't complain about anything. The other two are decently well kept. My mom loves to garden and work in the yard so our yard is the nicest looking and best kept out of all of them. They don't seem to mind to much, but even if they did they can't really say anything. Well unless they weed and clean up their gardens and cut their lawns more often, among other things.

Some of my neighbors might be tempted to complain, but

most of them depend on me to help them with their automotive emergencies.

I live around the corner from a city council person and two doors down from the 'ex' mayor.
They cited me for a perfect mint cond 500sel in the drive with an expired registration. They called it "a junk vehicle".
Needless to say they got a few letters from my lawyer.
Its all about who you piss off, what you know about folks.
Don't let it bother you.
BTW, my house is for sale. Gonna build a strawbale house on the ranch.

my neighbors have been really good,,,

they only complain when I drop wrenches when wrenching at 2:00 AM.
And that's only when the weather permits them to have their window open.

been accused of running a chop shop. Hate is not strong enough for the feelings some of my neighbors have for me. Since may we've had 4 cars into the driveway to be parted. Not terrible but this is boulder, so it might as well be 40 cars.

my neighbors are all 70+

theyre fabulous--mr martin across the street was a vw guy until he had a knee surgery and sold me his 68(cherry...68k miles- bought it new...sold it to me in 2001) it was still on its original clutch! sadly it lost its rear seal on the interstate, where i parked it and hoofed my ass to a fueling station...when i got back with a tow dolly--it was gone.

the police called 3 years later to ask if we found it. did i miss something? ive seriously thought about carrying a chain and picking up a car from the side of the road...

the headlys on the other side love my "lil' ole cawrs" they seem enthusiastic about my love of quality old cars-- the guy kittiecorner from us is a mustang person. you KNOW what that means...revving a ****ty old '87 5.0 with a coffeecan exhaust before he leaves, during driving and before he turns it off... they appreciate someone that likes old things heh heh. lloyd was a truck driver for a long time, hes about 80, so the mercedes is still a very respectable car to him! he likes to come over and hear/smell it run(its true...diesel gets to you after a while) betty(his wife) thinks theres nothing better, shes always amazed at how clean my cars are. i get lots of compliments(and requests...)

the lesbian on the left is great--keeps her yard tidy, keeps to herself and she sends nuts and fruit every christmas(i think thats great, it makes me giggle-- fruit for a fruit-- nuts for the nuts=)

i do kind of worry about the older couples departing, who knows who will move in after that.

did i mention that the guy that lived here had a pig for a pet and once burned the sofa/carpets in the yard when his wife divorced him?

I live in a small rural community/town that is pretty much butted right up against several east Dallas suburbs. Folks from church that either my wife or my kids know describe our house as "Oh, yall live in the house with all the old Mercedes out front". (only 3 ) You can imagine how much the wife likes to hear that......
There is only 2 houses on our side of the road and we're on about 6 acres between us. 5 houses across the road, and 3 of them are always working on their cars. Guy across the road just finished up a '69 Camaro that shakes the earth itself. Guy next to him has a 300Z with some kind of V8, and a 300TD. it is just transportation to him, he doesn't give a rip about it. Never have talked to either of them........

As a teenager working on my cars late at night with my buddies, there was a situation when one of the guys wanted to know what time it was and none of us had a watch. I told him, go dump out that tool box over by the garage door." So he did, and what a racket of tools it was. Then you could hear the neighbor yelling,"@#$! it's 2AM! Knock off that racket you @#$!'s!"
