Passed my emissions test with a reading off 0.0%

Yes I passed the state mandated emissions test in my 1985 300SD, blowing a whopping 0.0% (out of 20.0%) burning 80% Waste Veggie OIL !!!

Two years ago on dino diesel it blew a 0.4%.

Maybe I need to turn up the ALDA a bit.

They probably tested opacities. That's what they test for in WA state.

What is the deal with diesels and emissions testing. They only test for opacities here in Arizona. I'm curious...are diesels really worse for the environment than gasoline engines. Mine seems to blow a lot of smoke out the back but my understanding is that the particulates coming out of a diesel are not as bad for the enviroment. Anyone that can shed some light on this for me?

Diesel emissions have been discussed before. Check out this thread for example:
Diesel emissions-the truth

I think this test is a joke for the most part. My 87 300D which I used to own tested at 0.0% as well, but that's because minutes before the test I did an italian tuneup on the highway, leaving behind a thick black cloud! Also I've seen how this test is done and it's quite subjective as it depends on how much the operator floors it on the dynometer. An operator with an aggressive foot will mash the pedal to the floor instantly, resulting in a higher maximum opacity reading. Others will accelerate more gradually. Anyway in my state the limit is 40%, I don't see how anyone can fail this test and still have a driveable vehicle.
