Gonna get the '82 SD painted this coming week...

I got a new gasket for the rear glass yesterday and will have it installed on Monday. The car will go in the shop on Tuesday and will be out on Friday. I opted for the Maaco el' cheapo painto . The tranny will be reworked the week after the paint job and I will then clean her up and park her in the garage with a fitted cover on her. I don't plan to drive her except on the weekends.

This is the SD that I paid $500 for. It has a really nice interior. It had new tires on it when I bought it and 127,000 miles on the odo, of course that's not accurate now. The odo broke on the way home with it. I put in a used speedometer last week so I am satisfied with that. THe tranny work is coming free of charge(parts and labor) so after the $500 paint job I should be good to go. No need to put a hunk of money into it since I will probably find another car to tinker with and end up selling this one. I love these cars!

Kevin

Be sure to let us know how the Maaco paint job goes. Are you going to remove the trim?

Yes, please post pictures when the job is done! I need a paint job in a bad way and have just been too nervous to actually jump in and do it.

peace,
sam

I had my 123 240 and 126 300sd painted this past year at Maaco.
It depends on the individual dealer. In my case the owner is there from 7am until close 6 days a week. He is very particular and oversees everything.
I removed all the trim and bumpers and told him to take his time.. Do the good paying jobs first...
I opted for the $500 paint and had some minor dents, hoods roof and trunk stripped..
The first one was white and it came out better than i could have ever expected.
thats when I decided to do the second one in black..
I am very happy, the paint job is not perfect, however it is not a $3000 paint job either..

Well I got the car back!

Definitely NOT a $3000 paint job but I am satisfied. I got the $199 paint special and had them strip the hood roof and deck lid. I didn't have any dings repaired, wish I had now, but still it is very nice looking. When it was all said and done I had a little over $500 in the job ( stripping it costs extra and so does the replacing of the pinstripe). I have received nothing but positive comments on the car. I am sure some are just being nice as to not hurt my feelings . The paint is a shade darker than the original but again, I am satisfied. For no more than what I have in the car I really have no reason to complain.

On to the trans shop!

Yes, pictures and comments!

I need mine painted badly. The car is in great shape, (except it backed into over the weekend, badly), but the clearcoat and underlyiung paint is in real bad shape on the hood, sunroof, and trunk. This would be an awsome car with fresh paint. Maaco is certainly is in the running...

Can you see me now?

It's only a $199 paint job with VERY LITTLE body work. The Body work was more than the paint job. I should have had more done as far as dents and dings. Live and learn!

Thumbs up Nice

Looks great!! A few questions though.

1) did you do any prep work?

2) is it clear coated?

3) is that an orignal color?

It looks good. Thanx for any info.

Answers to you questions.

1. No
2. No
3. No. A shade darker than original. I would have to say that that is my biggest disappointment with the paint job. Shoot! for $199 I can have it painted again next year!

THanks for the compliments on the car! I bought it for $500 last July and have a little bit more than $1000 in it now. I have a free tranny rebuild coming up in about a week.

How much did they want for clearcoating?

mplafleur, your paint is in the same shape as mine, except the paint on my trunk is still ok. My roof looks horrible though. I should start a "Bad Paint Pics" thread. My paint is particularly bad on the hood above the exhaust manifold. Texas car + no garage = horrible paint.
