Instrument Repair?

Hi,

I have been watching this forum for some time, lots of good info. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for having my oil pressure gauge (82 300d) repaired. Mine was starting to leak. I have replaced it with a good unit from a salvage yard. However, my unit is a better cosmetic match (chrome dot in center) and I would like to have it fixed and reinstall it. Also, I wouldn't hurt to have a good spare. Thanks!

Craig

repair

the main thing that i have seen that causes the oil gauges to leak it hat when the oil line is disconnected you must use two wrenches, the 10mm for the line and a 13mm to hold "backup" on the gauge fitting, they normally start to leak from the area where the 13mm portion attaches to the body of the gauge it's self, i have never seen these repaired, just replaced. why not switch your needle and trim over to the replacement?

Thanks Ray,

I'm not sure when it started to leak (may have been due to past work). I removed the gauges to troubleshoot a problem with the temp and fuel gauges (broken wire) and noticed the start of an oil leak. I was going to switch the needle and faceplate, but it didn't know if I could remove them without damage. Is there a way of removing the needles without breaking anything?

Thanks,
Craig

I would consider getting a watch repair facility to do it for you. They fix watch hands all the time.

i know there may be some information in the forum archives regarding neddle removal, i have read where the faces are replaced and the needles repainted, there may be suggestions on how to do it without causing damage.

Those needles are VERY delicate plus sensitive to pressure, especially the speedo mechanism itself. As for that oil gauge leak, Ray's advice is accurate... you can also try teflon on the thread and tighten snugly (but not too much!). The chrome center button-dot is removable and can be switched over to the other O/F/T gauge - just be very careful... instead of switching needles, why not just repaint/restore the other not-so cosmetically nice needle... take your time, use quality tiny precision tools, and a steady hand is a must.

Thanks for all the info,

I was able to remove the chrome center dot from the broken gauge. I will install it on the new gauge when I get a chance to pull it out again and my hands are feeling steady. The faceplate and needles on the replacement gauge are in VG condition, so I will leave them alone instead of risking damage.

By the way, I also ended up with a large 123 clock (from a 240D?) that appears to be in VG condition from the salvage yard. I have no use for it because I have a tach. If anyone is in need of a (very cheap) clock please let me know. I would rather have someone use it than add to the stuff in my garage.

Craig
