thats not impossible, i had the cruise kick in at idle when the lever was bumped and it reved to redline. the way you can find that out is to step on the brake if it happens again. so yes the cruise control causing it is possible

Everything is possible, but as I said, its highly unlikely to be the cruise control.

A bad engine mount is much more likely to be the culprit, and it COULD cause the symptoms that are described. Checking for a bad engine mount first is an easy visual check.

I still think is the cruise because I was looking right at the linkage when it happened and the motor didn't move but the linkage started to move all by it self all the way to the full throttle position and it wasn't a violent or suddent move, it was a controlled, steady movement so I dont' think it was caused by the engine shifting position. Another factor is also the heat. This problem has happened on the 2 hottest days of the year making me think that some semiconductor somewhere in the cruise circuit might be having and intermittent problem caused by heat, especially after considering that the 2 times it has happened was after getting in the car after sitting in the sun the whole day, and from what I understand the cruise amp is in the passenger compartment.

it sounds from your description that the cruise may be the right way to look. i certainly dont think that the grease could be the problem.

By all means disconnect the cruise and take that out of the equation. It may be the ELR (Idle speed adjust) going whack-O. I never heard of this happening, just a possibility.
Oh yes, is the cruise actuator returning to its central (off) position? I have seen several CC arms all loose because they get banged and the springs fail or something. I just replaced one like that and its very possible that a loose arm could be sending an accelerate signal to the computer but I thought the CC only starts with a road speed of 15 MPH. I have to confess I don't really know because I seldom use the cruise on my '87

The arm looks good, but what I dont understand is that the cruise din't work to begin with, I thought it was caused by the front turn signal that was burned and I didn't pay any mind to it since I hardly get a chance to use the CC here in the city, I disconnected the cruise for now and will try to look at a diagram of the cruise wiring to try to figure something out.
