brake fluid reservoir grommet question

hello!

new guy here.

i need to replace the brake fuid reservoir grommets on my 1981 240D, and Fastlane shows two different types as being available.

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1KG02UIZ71KG02UUKR&year=1981&make=MB&model=240-D-002&category=N&part=Brake+Reservoir+Grommet

how do i know which is the right kind? i've only had the 240D for a little over a month now, and the last time i owned a car was 1997, so please be understanding of my ignorance.

also, if anyone has any other tips for this project, i'm all ears. I've read several hours worth of threads on here and everything looks very helpful.

thanks.

I'd stick with the black ones though they're probably the same thing according to the specs on top of page, except different manufacturer and color, though I've never seen blue ones.

Congratulations (I think) on not owning a car for so long.

Some sugesstions;

- This can be done w/out removing reservoir.
- Place several rags under ther reservoir.
- Remove all brake fluid wih a turkey baster, Clean remainder wih a lint free cloth.
-Carefully rock reservoir back and forth to remove.
- Lube seals with a slight amount of brake fluid to help in re-installation.

This is something all owners should consider doing.

thanks for the suggestions/info!

i'm assuming i will have to bleed the air out of the brakes after i have replaced the grommets... is this correct? is there any way to avoid this?

thanks.

okay, i guess that's a no.

if i need to bleed the brake lines anyway, i'll probably go ahead and flush all the fluid.

what should i do with the old fluid? can it be recycled?

thanks.

There are no choices except MFG. You don't need to bleed brakes when you change these seals.
