I would crack (loosen) the fuel supply tube to any one of the six injectors and turn the engine over and see if fuel is squirting out that injector in order to confirm that you are getting fuel to the injectors.

Using an ohms meter, I would check again all glow plugs. If you get a zero, or infinity reading on any one of the 6 GP's, it is dead. A typical reading will be anywhere between 0.1 and 0.9 indicating that the GP is functional.

If 2 or more GP's aren't functioning, it will be difficult firing it off, and I doubt you would get it running at all on less than 3 GP's, but maybe?

I suspect air in the fuel lines. its too bad that MB didn't put a manual primer pump on these models.
FWIW, always fill the filter (spin on) with diesel fuel or, if you believe in the stuff put Lubro Moly when replacing it.

I have a 80 300SD too, what is the correct way of changing the fuel filter/separator. It looks like a mini oil filter sat close to the inj pump.

I think I saw a plastic screw 1.5 inch diam,is it for priming?

So I should fill up the filter with diesel, save some time for cranking it.

Some folks just crack open the injector and let DSL bleed out of there?

I am sure it had been written here before, excuse me for a real Klutz if finding it.
Thanks

Funny enough, I had this same type of thing happen on another 87 300D I owned before... turns out that the cat was entirely plugged and wouldn't allow the car to restart... I'm not sure what your issue is but I lost power and it wouldn't restart until I opened it up and replaced it.

SD300,

To replace the filter near the IP (it is called the secondary filter although a better name would be the main filter) , just loosen the 22mm bolt on top of the filter. R&R the can and insert and tighten the bolt. If you want to save a lot of pumping the manual primer pump, you can fill the new filter with Diesel fuel.

Then pump the manual primer pump vigorously until you hear the relief valve in the IP passing fuel. It is not necessary loosen anything to bleed the system.

One cavaet: If the manual primer pump leaks fuel, it is time to replace it because it is potentially a source of air getting into the fuel system. The newer primer pump is a different design and an improvement over the old one. The new primer pump is relatively inexpensive, about $15.

No way to pump the '87 except crank the engine, stop after 30 seconds to let the motor cool down and the resume, it should start, eventually. if the battery doesn't die first.
ALWAYS FILL THE SPIN ON FILTER WITH DIESEL
