Interior vent removal

The driver side vent (closest to driver window) on my 83 300D is broken. The flaps that close off the vent when the knob is turned don't close. I suppose it is the gear mechanism that is broken. How do I remove the round vent ball assembly? Do I just have to pull them out or do I have to remove the dash? Please say I just have to pull them out I have tried but they are pretty tight. Also, my AC does not work and so I just leave the temperature setting on min and have the EC button pushed in on the controller to get outside air. Every once in a while the fan starts blowing full blast without me having done anything to it. Does this seem normal?

Thanks for the help.
rene

vent removal

Its very easy....detach the plastic shroud under the driver side dash above the footwell so you have access from under the dash to where the vent is. Then pull off the section of flex vent hose connected to the vent. Then just grab onto the interior part of the vent (inside the dash) and hold the outside with the other hand, and twist...it will turn, unclip and pull off, and the whole thing will come out easily...one piece from inside dash, one piece from outside dash. Note, there is a "spring washer" (3" diameter) that fits in between the two pieces...it should come out with the inside half (but may hang up on the dash hole, and you may not know its there). The whole assembly consists of these three pieces. When you see the pieces apart, it will be very obvious how this thing goes back in....very, very simple!!

As far as the intermittent blast of air, sounds like a malfunctioning pushbutton unit, or some other component...sorry I cant be much help there.

Good luck
Mark

Thanks for the insite, it does not seem to bad. I was worried that I would have to remove the dash. Now if I can only find out why my temp controller blower comes on full blast. Maybe it a bad temp sensor?

Thanks again.
