Control Arm 1997 E300D

Im looking at replacing the control arms in the front end. I have a rattle on bumps and some shimmy at 55 mph. I cannot narrow down where the exact problem is. I have already replaced the ball joints which fixed some of the shimmy. The ride seems a little rough on bumps also so I am considering replacing the shocks too. I am confused at weather to replace the front upper or lower control arms?. There is a listing for both parts. Is there anyone that has done this work, and any suggestions to save me time and maybe some money? Thanks!.. Indy

I have the same on mine. I wouldn't worry about it. Make sure you have no play in the actual wheel by moving it up and down with a crowbar and try to shake it side to side. If you feel no play then leave it be. I replaced my swaybar links thinking it was the problem. It went away breifly then came back. I also have the shimmy, steering wheel vibration at about 55mph.

Do you also have the rough ride when you hit bumps etc? ..... For the Shimmy: I read a thread somewhere that a guy did practically everything then finally replaced the control arms and it fixed his shimmy problem. I was wondering if anyone has come across and repaired this problem. I don't think it is normal. Thanks!.. Indy
