Wahler thermostat part number?

Posted the other day about an overheating problem (85 sd), and am now getting ready to put in a new thermostat after flushing the block and radiator. Anyway, I bought a wahler thermostat at the local parts store- ( good guys, been using them > 20 years). They sold me a wahler, but when I got the old one out it does not look the same as the one they sold me. The diameter is the same, and it fits in the housing, but the end opposite of the end with the spring is not as long, ( maybe deep would be better?), as the old one. Will this matter? does anyone know the correct wahler part number? They are closed now, and I don't want to put this thing in if it is not right.

I had the same thing happen to the 300D 2.5. I thought I was getting a good deal from a local parts store and when I took it out it looked different. I returned the thermostat and bought one from the dealer at only 32 dollars for an OEM one. I figured that if this one lasted 13 years; the new one should last just as long. The dealer one was IDENTICAL and I paid less than what the local auto parts store charged me.

well

i dont know that part number but you know about the disc on the bottom that moves down and closes off one part of the housing while the other end opens? the disc is essential to proper operation. if that is missing it is the wrong stat for a benz. the throw is also important but if it is the proper style of diverting stat the throw should be the same, i would think.

Its a moot point. It doesn't fit in the housing. Going to the dealer in the morning.
