Alfie, does your TD have EGR? That's another thing that suggests to me that this is not a factory turbo. If Euro 603.96s don't have EGR, I doubt 617s would.
I've been in a 300TDt outside the US and it wasn't a US spec car. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

and
if it is a euro car with a miles speedo that means it has been changed. if i had a nice low mileage car like this would i sell it on ebay? any benz this old that is touted to have very low mileage is deserving of a very hard sceptical look by any seasoned buyer.

Sixto: My car is a European-version 300TD-T. It is NOT a US-spec car. Euro-spec 617.952 do not have to be equivalent to US-spec versions when it pertains to emission requirements. My VIN/chassis numbers translate fine through the Russian website as well on the EPC database: VIN Decoded It didn't have an EGR at first, but it was retrofitted with an "EGR/Pump Recal" by BEHR automotive in Conshohocken, PA (the testing lab was in Lansdale, PA) back when the original owner imported it in the US in 1/6/84 with Customs Entry No. 822717 through the Port of NY. I have copies of all the records performed by BEHR (including HC CO NOx Evap Part testing/validation). Back in 1984-85, the EPA was located at 6 World Trade Center - the EPA Chief for Investigations/Imports Section - Manufacturers Operations Division would have the final documented approval and release of bond on imported cars that have passed EPA federal emmision requirements. I have all records to validate my car's import status, EPA approval, Behr testing results with data, and as well as its Turbodiesel (Engine #617.952) authenticity as an original factory car. The original previous (elderly) owner of my 300TD-T was very meticulous and kept ALL records of the car since new... He even kept a diary for the car! - I was simply amazed on how well the car has been documented. He passed away recently but bless his soul for taking care of this fine example of a GERMAN w123 turbodiesel wagon loaded with rare options/goodies... FWIW, read up on Michael Rohde/Jens-Peter Sirup's recently released "Mercedes-Benz W123" German book and you will also discover other rare options, models, factory data, production details, and lots of valuable info (such as turbodiesel for Euro-spec wagons)... ISBN 3-89880254-X. I beilieve there has been a recent 2005 release so the ISBN may have been updated/modified. Google it if you're interested/curious.

So whats this Russian translation site. I have a gray market 300TDT, with lots of quirks too. US headlights, euro bumpers etc, the interior of this car looks a lot like mine (black plastic) etc. Not sure how they did the importation in 1984, but my car has a badge from the NC DMV riveted to the body.

MB Russia Vin Decoder IF that riveted badge does not work, then look on your firewall (under center of cowl) and the chassis number is stamped there... just add WDB in front of 123... and decode on the site.

I at one point had a 1983 grey-market 300D. The thing that would verify the odometer mileage would be the import plate. There should be a plate that was attached by us customs outlining who imported the vehicle and what the odometer read before it was converted to Miles. This plate also states whether the car was in compliance with emissions and safety standards (mine had the headlamps replaced, but NOT the bumpers....strange). Anyway, look for the plate, and you're golden. As for the engine...Not sure, the ALDA looks very similar to the German turboed versions at the time (notice the cap on the adjuster screw). Mine didn't have an ALDA (and thus, no turbo), but since it had a four-speed, the Germans thought it was unnecessary to provide a turbo (go figure). As for everything else, no doubt it came from elsewhere. It's got the same features as a base Ford Taurus (minus the standard a/c in the Taurus), and it has an obvious lack of Mercedes "luxury looks." No wood in the dash or anywhere in fact, manual climate controls in a 300D, manual rear windows, seats with cloth, lack of tachometer, manual idle adjust screw, headlamp angle adjuster, lack of cruise control, thin Euro bumpers. I do have to say that the headlamps may be the original, but the sealed beam may have been chaged to US spec. The reason I say that is beacause the fog lamps are not yellow.
Geez, now I miss my Euro...I miss the lack of a/c, cruise control, an automatic transmission in rush-hour traffic, leather seats, and easy-to-find engine parts. Oh well, The lack of sophistication was what made that car awesome. I hope the guy I sold it to enjoys it for many years....

Yep, I have seen dozens of w123 Euro-spec cars here and especially overseas, and have owned quite a few Euro-spec variants too (200, 280CE, and currently a 300TD and a 200). Most of them have these a-la-carte type options...guess that's also one of the reasons that make 'em quite more desirable and unique in its own ways... I love the look of the original Euro-headlights w/ the in-dash adjustment capability (which is the way it should have been for all specs IMO), and the discreet Euro-bumpers. I'm sure there are many more w123 Euro-versions out there that you'll eventually see pop-up for sale every now and then...
