Under the car now..300D to 300SD Transmission swap issue
Hi all...
I am trying to swap a 84/85 300D Trans into a 83 300SD. As I have read in past posts, the tail housing is the only difference in the transmission and that the pickup needs to be changed. In the transmission from the 300D, on the right side of transmission rear section (the case side to which the tail housing bolts), I see an additional hole in the case that does not exist in my 300SD. It looks like it might feed or be fed fluid from (what I think goes in there as it fell into my hands when removing tail housing) a plastic angled tube with a o-ring. My guess is it might be to feed fluid to the gear for the Speedo? 1. What if anything is done with the opening in the swap? 2. I am not clear on what the pickup is and therefore what to change. Thank you Don

Yup that sounds like the speedo pick up. I'm not sure how you would plug it, someone else will chime in with that information.

probably
can cut off the cable, fill the opening with the gray epoxy putty or something similar and screw it into the hole.

There is no cable to cut. It is a casted hole that seems to feed fluid through a plastic tube assemble. I say seems, because when removing the tails housing it knocked the palstic tube out of "whereever it goes".

The plastic tube feeds the gear for the mechanical speedometer. I know there is no need for the lubing when completed because it will be an electronic speedometer. I was worried that if I left the plastic part out or plugged the hole it would affect the fluid pressure in some way, so I trimed the plastic tube to fit with the parts needed for the electronic speedometer and put the tail housing on.
Hope that works. Don
