More outrageous eBay claims...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Clean-1980-Mercedes-240D-Diesel-Cold-AC-38-mpg_W0QQitemZ4564985122QQcategoryZ6329QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I don't know which is sadder, the seller who claims that a 240D will get 38+ MPG on average or the buyer who believes him.

Is this guy a member of this board? I see him listing cars all the time on ebay or maybe it is someone else from the same town, but I know I have seen several diesels from College Park over the past months.

He also makes the "Million Mile" claim in his ad too!

The seller of my E300DT claimed 37MPG in his listing...I have yet to see over 30 in 6 months and 6,000 miles of driving it. The seller was not even a dealer, but owned the car for several years prior to selling it to me...why people have to blatently lie is beyond me

Well I am familiar enough with college park to know you can't drive downhill very far much less all the time to get that milage....Have no idea who that is....but anyone who makes claims like that is a shyster.

College Park is not one of the Nicer areas of Washington, DC metro area if you catch my drift.

That area is inside the Washington, D.C. Beltway. Given Washington, D.C. driving and traffic, I think it is safe to say that car doesn't see highway driving - even if on the highway around here. Rush hour traffic in this area is a mess and not likely to get you 38MPG even if the car could.

Here is something else that is interesting. It has a Euromotor Cars dealer seal on the rear. I worked at Euromotor Cars at that time as a porter - shuffling cars and preparing them for new delivery - so it is possible I drove the car before. Sorry, but I don't have any recollection of how well it performed.

Heck, an Automatic 240D in DC traffic, its likely he was the CAUSE of many of those traffic backups.

This same guy had a 190D 2.2 which kept revolving on ebay at least three times. He also had a 240D engine on ebay and was put off when I asked what the compression numbers were.

He claims it doesn't smoke at all......right I guess he's never pushed the pedal to the floor on a hill.

Ouch! I drove my 220D (4sp though) in Fairfax rushour traffic (not on purpose though) and while I constantly had people having to hit their brakes when I made the 1-2 shift, it definately did not cause any backups - traffic never got going that fast!
More than once I found it very convenient to put it in first and just roll along at idle as everyone just creeed along. I could even use the idle adjuster on the dash to adjust my speed a bit.

Yeah, and the best mileage I have seen is 35mpg going 60mph in 100% interstate highway driving, so I'm sure that guy is full of it.

The engine doesNOT burn oil ( like most older diesels do )
My car hasn't burn an ounce in the 2700 miles I've driven it. Plus I have more miles then that car!

That's interesting that you do that too. I discovered the 1st gear idle at 5mph awhile ago. It's a nifty trick. I can't use it too often since the traffic signals cause stop and go mostly.

35mpg!....I can barely crack 25mpg going 60mph until the tank runs out with my W115 240D

I read the eBay posting carefully...I don't think he was really making the million mile claim. I cut and pasted what he wrote:

2. Car only has 191K . That might sound like much but these Mercedes diesels pretty - much run for ever . Yes , you can easily take this beauty up to a million miles , if well taken care of . ( The record at the Chrysler museum is 2.7miles ) .Car therefore has a very long life span ahead .

Notice that he said the record at the Chrysler museum is "2.7miles". I don't know about you guys, but that number doesn't really impress me

I live in college park

I would describe it as a blue collar 'hood.

I got my car off ebay from a guy in Laurel, which is only a few miles away.

looks like it could be the same guy. He was a reasonably str8 shooter, but he had several ebay alias and he knew how to 'work the system'. Anyway I paid a fair price for mine.

The 38 MPG is bogus, but besides that, the claims don't seem 'outrageous' but his feedback IS questionable.

You will notice the 0.00001 size font after MPG that says "downhill"

Wonderful DC beltway gridlock. I hate it. Surprisingly I do get 32mpg consistently driving back and forth to work. From Annapolis to Bethesda and back. 1/2 of the drive is at 70mph and the other half is like 10mph.

That's a pretty long commute Chuck. I get about 30 on my commute from southern MD to Alex VA. And I have to cross the dreaded Wilson Bridge.

Though it doedn't matter much now since it's all veggie.
