Fuel guage needle keeps flickering

My 80 w 116 300sd, her fuel guage needle keeps flickering, shaking all over the sweep. looks like she has severe case of Parkinson!
What seems to be the problem?
Annoying is the least, and can't really tell how much fuel i have!

turn the key on and strike the tank in the middle of the trunk rear wall while watching the needle, if it jums aroung the likely problem is the sending unit, also check the connections at the electrical plug on the sender.

you might wanna try,,,

Turn the car on, crank (short burst to turn glow plugs off) sit perfectly still, does it still fluctuate?

If Yes it could be a bad gauge.

If no, tap the dash and see if it fluctuates, if no, tap the rear deck.

Now start the car. Do not drive it, does the needle fluctuate? Does your car vibrate?

Could be a number of things.

report back the results of your tests.

I have available used sending units and used gauges in my store.
