Reasonable $Quote? (auto glass)

Someone broke into my 300DT Wed. morning, breaking the drivers side rear door window to get in. Other than the window nothing was damaged, and my losses were minimal... just some cd's and a book sitting on the rear seat.

I recieved a quote for $249.00 to replace the glass from a mobile european car autoglass specialist. Does this price seem reasonable? The shop was reccomended to me after talking to various MBZ specialists in the area. Im nit picky for having a job done right, even if its just replacing a glass window.

I would check to see if you have glass coverage with your insurance company. If you do the repair won't cost you a cent.

What kind of glass are they using? Pilkington is popular that is what my windsheild is, Volvo uses it from the factory.

I havent contacted my Ins. agency yet, figured i'd fiigure out whom i want to do the work, and get a quote and have that ready.

Pilkington is indeed the brand this company uses.

When my windsheild cracked I called my insurance company and they had a few glass places they wanted me to use. For example if I wanted the dealer to replace it I would have to pay out of pocket and the insurance company would give me most of it back.

However one of their people was close to my house and when I showed him my W126 he knew the cars and had done a few of them before. He walked me around the car telling me exactly how to pull the windsheild.

Pilkington is just as good if not better then the stock Sekurit glass MB put in. He gave me a choice of brands, ie cheap Asian stuff, Sekurit, Pilkington ect.

I typically sell door glass for $40 a piece. It's not to hard to replace, or you can have someone do the work and just buy used glass.

Door glass is quite easy to replace (if you have the time) and your insurance doesn't pay for it.

My 240D came without a drivers rear window (someone threw a bottle through it)...

The quote probably included, I hope, cleaning up the broken glass. This is a very important part of the operation and should be done meticulously. Tiny bits of glass get into the seats and rug and over time will tear the seats and rug apart if not cleaned up properly. I tell people who we have repaired their cars who have had broken windows to vaccum their interiors at least a couple of times to avoid problems down the road. I personally run our shop vac numerous times over the affected areas, but if you look in the sun at the right angle, you will always see a bit of reflection.

seems about right to me. i wouldnt use a used windshield because too many are sandblasted and are annoying at low sun angles. i have changed more than one because of this.

Auto Glass Specialists will come to your home and install a driver or passenger side window on these cars for under $150 including all labor and the glass....when I shattered my passenger window on my SD they came out in 2 days and installed a brand new window for $127 not bad! Dealer wanted $600

$249 is really pretty expensive. Find a pick your part salvage yard. Its not a hard job at all, should take you an hour or so if you are really slow.

You can practice on the junk in the yard!! Ask the board what tools you need to bring.

BTW the original poster is talking about the rear DOOR glass, not the windshield!

I'm unsure whether to get a Used window or a new one. I think I can get a new one for $160 and a used one, if I pull it myself, for $20.00---

Whay would you do? $140 is a lot of tools, McDonalds breakfasts, and even on a rare day, a couple of beers...

Get a used window.

Looking at your site you should have no problem whatsoever tackling that job in no time flat. For the 140 dollars its just not worth it (for a side window)

You could even buy your daughter a treat from the ice cream store!
