I loved my TDIs until 'high' mileage set in...

A 2k Beetle sold at 90k
A 2k Golf I'm still running

The Beetle needed MAF replacement, the Golf twice. Each needed injection pump replacement (the Beetle within and the Golf after warranty).
The golf, w/ auto trans., needed a new transmission control module JUST before the warranty expired. numerous other electrical issues I can't recall (oh, yes, a new dash cluster for the Beetle)...

Can you see the eBay ad? "These babies will last well over 110,000 miles!"

I bought a 98 Jetta TDI new and 302,000 miles later, can say it's been the most reliable car I've owned. Bar none. It has 50 hp and 100 ft/lbs more than stock and has been that way for a long time...an extremely durable car.

Considering in 100k miles, I've got more repair costs in the MB than the sticker of the VW, it has been a joy.

I have had many VW diesels throughout the years. I currently own a 98 Jetta Tdi that I bought new and now has 219k miles.

It is the best and most trouble free car I have ever owned hands down.

wahoo

hey yall, guess what?

i wrote a post people replied to! it doesnt happen often

i like the golf 3 door, but why cant you get it with manual options and a diesel engine/5 speed?

that is whats keeping me out of a modern diesel. i cant afford a 25 thousand dollar electrical nightmare, nor can i afford a huge heavy duty truck or a $30k jeep liberty.

ive read lots of stories about newer vws being crazy unreliable. and i'd rather spend my time driving my own car, not the tiny chevrolet they always seem to have at the rental agency.

they once tried to give me a chevy metro and i refused. i had to sit at the rental agency until someone brought in a bigger car.

now now

it doesnt take a whole lot of mental capacity to figure out that the benz is a better, more comfortable, safer machine.

i do think the 40hp 1200 might be quicker than the 2400 N/A diesel in the 240, though

Boy that is a tough one...
If both had 4-speed sticks...it would be close
The 240D has more power/torque but of course it is much heavier.
Hmm...

For me, each has its place. I find it comical that the VW’s are each worth much more than the Merc, and appreciate. The Bug has been converted to 12 volts and has a stock 1500 - it’s so much faster than the Merc that there is no comparison. I’m not practical and neither are my cars, but I’ll never get rid of any of them.

i dont know if it really is or not because i havent driven the vw in about 3 *years*

long story short... i took on a full restoration when i was in my freshman year of university and have not yet completed the work! i do have most of the parts though!

what leads me to believe that the vw would be faster is the power being available immediately as opposed to the 240s count to ten power curve.

this made me think of... a nice bumper sticker!

"count to 10, i should be moving by then"

i love the humorous bumper stickers that the 240 makes me think of, i just need to make them! new thread coming soon=)

m. skeen,

You bastard! I'm jealous. There is no VW like an air-cooled VW.

FIRST CAME AIR.....THEN CAME WATER

I'm glad to hear that a number of TDI owners have spoken up with better results than my two- I did notice that most positive responses were from 1998 models...

less relays, sensors and modules? more careful assembly?

Sub-'98 models are good too.

Our '96 Passat tdi was the most reliable car we've ever owned.
