help! window regulator problem

in my 90 350sdl i recently, 3 mo ago, had a new window regulator installed on the driver door. brose. within a week it started with the ratt aattatt tatt again. i assumed that it was the gear on the motor. so i ordered a new motor since they wont sell the gear wo the motor. today my indy tells me that the regulator is shot.
my question is why is a brand new regulator bad? they did not have their best mechanic on it when the present one was installed a few months ago. is it something he could have done wrong? or could a bad gear on the motor have caused the problem with the regulator? also the window is flopping around in there and sometimes gets jammed outside the rubber channel next to the mirror, so i wonder if it is in there correctly.
this is getting expensive! help!

Not certain

if the regulators are the same but I recently installed a new motor on the drivers side of my 84 190D. Was my first trip down this road, but gave some insight as to the workings of what seems to be a tempermental area of these MB's. On the 190D there are two plastic pieces about 1" square and 1/4" thick that slide within guide rails, providing the lift to the window. One of these had broken free from its center drive pin which caused the window to go up and down in a less than desireable manner, although it did still work, after a fashion (similar to what you describe). I used some plastic epoxy weld to reattach the piece, reassembled the mechanism with the new motor, and all is right with the world (and the window).

What I did notice was that even with presumably years of wear on the plastic slides, they fit quite snuggly within the guide rails. If, in fact, the regulators are similar, and your mechanic did not lubricate the rails of the new regulator, it would explain the chatter and premature failure.

thanks for

your comments perhaps the lub is a factor. it was a new regulator. there are two teeth just chewed off the gear on the arm. amazing.
