I saw it. I tend to believe that this bearing was well on it's way to failure. The rumble has to be in the later stages, well after it developed some bearing whine that was ignored.

Think about it. The only way it can rumble is if the surface of the rollers has really deteriorated markedly. This didn't happen overnight. There had to be some evidence of bearing distress for quite some time before the rumble would start.

What I said was:

However, it cannot rumble, unless it has trememdous clearance and is starting to come apart.
In this case, the bearing did not have tremendous clearance, however, the rollers were damaged to a point where the bearing was in danger of coming apart. So, I stand corrected on the clearance, however, the rumble is clearly a sign that the bearing has progressed down the path of destruction and the rollers, and/or race, have significant surface distress.

I have a grinding noise on passenger wheel area when I drive it is more pronounced at low speed and gets higher pitched when I speed up it also is worse when I break. The wheel only does this when it has the weight of the car on it. I have replaced front caliper, turned rotor and replaced pads and greased bearings checked for rubbing on dust shield still does it.I have just about come to the conclusion that it is the wheel bearings. I just wanted to get some input from some other person. One other question? when you break does it put more of a load on the wheel bearings. Thanks

yes, braking puts more load (weight) on the front wheels, if the bearing(s) are on their way out, then braking will make them louder.
thats one way to tell which side is bad if you arent sure - the weight shifts and loads side of the car on the outside of the turn, so you turn the car (like on an on-ramp - you wanna develop some G's for a couple seconds or more) and whichever makes the noise louder has the bad bearing.

If your wheel bearing is making noise it is already damaged. Repacking it will quiet it for a while but it will fail again. If you have the car jacked up and the wheel hub off enough to check the bearing then you might as well change the bearings and seals. Cost less than $100, takes an hour or so and you are good for another 500k miles.

I would agree, you should hear it on turns and between 20-45MPH, and I might add that both sides of mine failed within 1500 miles of each other. I really think, looking back, that a bozo at the last place I took it over tightened the retainers and caused them to fail. In any respect I ended up doing both sides at two seperate times.
It is an easy job except for removing the #@$!@ races, at least for me. Check out posts on tips to remove
