My Bowden cable keeps Re-adjusting itself
 

I have been adjusting my Bowden cable on my 82 300TD to get the tranny to shift at the proper times. I dial it all in so the shifting is happening at the proper RPM. Then after a short time, maybe a few days, it starts to unscrew itself so that that the shifting starts to happen to soon and the cluncks come back. I was thinking I would disconnect the cable so that I could put a nut on the white bolt that adjusts the cable so keep it from unscrewing. Will this work and how do I disconnect the cable from the top of the motor.

You might want to check....sometimes the bracket for the cable bends as you romp & stomp on the "gas" pedal. You can bend it back towards the firewall some and then loosen the cable some, if needed. If your bracket is bending, you can weld in a little support or perhaps (JB Weld) epoxy a metal support onto the bottom.

I'm not sure that you can put a nut on the white threaded adjuster because of the ball socket. It appears that, to remove the cable, you need to pinch the sides of the black plastic piece (that also serves as the nut for the threaded end) to allow it to slide through the bracket. I would do this carefully in case the plastic has become brittle with age. The bracket has a slot at the top for the cable to come out. I would pop the ball socket off the ball and disengage the cable from the bracket and try to see why there isn't sufficient friction between the nut and threaded end to keep it from turning on its own. Mine seems to have enough friction to hold whatever adjustment I make.
