400K too much?
Would you buy a 300D with 400K if it was one owner, with all records since new? In nice shape, but jeez, that's a lot of miles!
Or a 300D with a bit of body damage (no rust anywhere) and half the miles for the same price? I'm not sure if I'm going to buy another, but I'd like to get opinions on how many miles is too many. Who has more than 400K? Am I nuts?

Nope, don't buy it at 400K unless there is a documented engine and transmission change within the last 100K.
The engine is getting near the end of its useful life, so figure about $3K to rebuild it (minimum, if you do most of the work yourself). The trans is also overdue. About $1.5K for that, if you remove and install it yourself. You can get a real nice vehicle for $4.5K and not bother to do the work. |
