Shaft behind vacuum pump

Well we have been struggling with my vacuum system and now have another question... After we removed the vacuum pump, the "shaft" (I don't know what else to describe it as) that is being run by the timing belt/chain and I believe runs the fuel pump has about 1/16 inch of play. We have no idea what cause the destruction of the vacuum pump, but are afraid that might be the culprit.

I don't have a diagram or anything about this shaft.. mercedes can't tell us anything about the tolerance and the next step seems to be tearing the front of the engine apart and replacing the shaft.

Anyone have ANY ideas... I am tearing my hair out!

Thx,

Rob

Hey,
Go to USER CP up on top. Then select EDIT SIGNATURE and put in the year make and model of your vehicle.
Then go to EDIT PROFILE and under location put in your location. You can also put in anything else here that may be important.

In the DIY setion there is a link to a vacuum pump rebuilding tutorial. The "play" in your shaft is probably a bad bearing or some other worn part. You can buy rebuilding kits almost anywhere but you will have to use the search function here to find what bearing you need. that normally does not come with the rebuilding kit.

Good luck

Danny

Ok...so you have the old pump with the diaghram.
You gonna have to wait for someone with knowledge of this pump to chime in.

I would not suggest using it until it's repaired.
You may also want to consider upgrading the pump to the newer style.

That shaft is called the "intermediate" (sp?) shaft and I think a little play is normal. I dont think that would be your problem. We need to know what MB you have at this point.

Steve,

Its the pre changeover engine 300cd. (1980) so I have a diaphramed vac pump with two lines coming out of it. My vac. pump failed (the cam inside failed) and I have a new one... my mechanic is wondering if the play in the intermediary is what caused the failure. At anyrate Mercedes has no reference to it so we are trying to make sure before we put another pump in we don't end up with the same result.

Thx,

Rob

There will normally be a little play in the intermediate shaft but I can't imagine that it would be enough to adversely effect the vac pump.

It is very good that you are replacing the pump. These rollers can fail, fall into the crankcase and wreck the engine.

My $0.02,

Fixed!

Okay, they have it back together and said to me "man we have been working on this car for a while and it has never shifted better!"

The new (used) vac. pump did the trick...

Thanks!

Rob
