R4 Compressor w/stepped ports

I searched the archives and found a little information regarding the R4 compressor.

Car is a 1985 300D. The compressor has died, and I am replacing it with the newer style R4, one with stepped ports. Ordered from the local NAPA store.
The compressor comes with new style sealing washers, o-rings encased in metal washers. One is green, and two red.

The archives state to follow the notes on the Fast Lane parts search, and I found the same notes on another MB parts source. The discharge port is machined approx. 1/8" into the compressor, and will use the green seal. The suction port is machined approx. 1/16" into the compressor and uses the brass seal.

Noticing the parts are from 4-Seasons, does anyone have the 4-Seasons part number for the brass seal? And is the brass seal thicker than the red seal? (it would have to be).

The reason for this is: If one tries to use the green seal with a red seal, the result is a manifold hose that will not seal correctly, (the manifold plate will sit at an odd angle) likewise if one tries to use both red seals. The instructions that come with the compressor do not tell you this.

Alan

I have recently conquered this problem. Like you, I bought a new (not a rebuilt/remanufactured) R-4 compressor. Like you, the part I recieved was from Murray, which I believe is a Four Seasons subsidiary. Like you, I could not make the compressor seal with the parts at hand. I ended up looking at the Worldpac catalog for the "hose manifold seal kit"; you can see it in Fastlane here.

I ended getting the brass/yellow seal from NAPA, its simply referred to as a "thick yellow seal" for the GM R-4. They had to order it, cost around 4 bucks. It is wide enough that it covers the deeper port, while the green one mates up on the other side. If you are under the car looking at the compressor, and your feet are sticking out the front end of the car, the green seal (with the short pilot) will be on the left side, and the yellow/brass seal will be on the right. Once this was taken care of, everything snugged right up.

This is exactly what I had to do. The counterman at the local NAPA store and I looked at the Four Seasons catalog, and found the listing near the back, seals listed by color, thickness and diameter. I ordered a few extra to have on hand. Even the manifold hose pattern that comes with new compressors was shown.
Glad to hear you were successful with the a/c repair. Alan

The fine folks at my local NAPA store are not so helpful. Could anyone provide the part numbers for the seals that are needed to make the stepped compressor work? '82 300D.

I called the local NAPA store and the counterman looked in the Four Seasons catalog.
The "thick yellow seal" should be the brass seal you are looking for. Part number is 407279
And I just noticed you need the part number for the green seal also.
Your NAPA store must have tossed the paper catalog, a big no-no in the parts business.

From the NAPA climate control catalog.
407279 yellow seal
407278 green seal
407277 red seal

I used the green seal for the pressure side and the yellow seal for the suction side. Car was an '85 300D 123.133, new R4 compressor and manifold hose.

You can get the AC Delco part number 15-20058 called the "seal washer kit" and it comes with all three sizes. Your local AC Delco distributor should be able to provide them.
