when in a jam, should I use gasoline/oil mix?

I run 100% wvo. I drove 100 miles from my home 2 nights ago to a concert, and I misjudged the amount of fuel my car(240D with 617turbo) would consume. When I got out of the concert at midnight, I realized I needed fuel, not one diesel station was open in Santa Barbara so I crossed my fingers and drove 30miles to the next town north while the needle was on R. Luckily I was able to purchase diesel at 1 am in Buelton. In the future should I mix, say 2 gallons of RUG with a couple of qt. of motor oil, just to get 30-60 miles? What do you all think?

1) Stop at a grocery store and buy a couple of gallons of Mazola™.
2) Pour Mazola™ into fuel tank.
3) Drive to a station with diesel.
4) Enjoy tasty-smelling exhaust during trip.
5) Fill tank with diesel.

My opinion would be if you do that, 30-60 miles is likely all the farther the car will make it. Much better option to carry a couple gallons of vegetable oil in the trunk. Or, better yet, fill your tank sometime other than the middle of the night.

Gas is such a poor lubricant it will damage your pump. Too much gas for the oil. Not only that, gas has a very low centane reading.

As was wisely reccomended, dump some new canola oil in there and you will safely make it to a fuel station. Canola has great lubricating properties for you IP. And it smells cool too.

Gas BAD. Canola GOOD!

What are the hazards (if any?) involved with using vegetable oil?

I ran out of diesel one time--same day I learned the fuel gauge had become only an approximate volume meter. I was in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas near the Mercedes dealorship (nice part of town). The only "food store" nearby was Eatzi's Market and Bakery and it was just across the street from where I had coasted to a stop. No vegetible oil--just high priced extra virgin olive oil. I was running late for a meeting so I bought a couple of quarts and made it to the next diesel station which was only about 2 miles away. Exhaust smelled nice, but that was the most expensive fuel I have ever run.

Since then I pay closer attention to my odometer and only rely on the guage until it hits the 1/2 tank line.

When buying it you should have told the clerk you were using it to fuel your car

Yes, but if he was in the Oaklawn area of Dallas, the guy behind the counter might think he was chatting him up.

I wouldn't knowingly put gasoline in my diesel for any reason, even to thin it for extreme winter use. I find mine runs just as good on the top quarter tank as it does on the bottom quarter. I also use my trip meter as a gauge for when I need to fill, even though my fuel gauge seems to be accurate. Kind of use one to check the other mostly.

just my $.02.

1980 300 TD owners manual suggests up to 30% RUG added to diesel for winter thinning.

Are you sure that isn't only to be done if you can't obtain #1 diesel in extreme cold conditions?
